This big AMD release is the first of it's kind since I started learning about the PC hardware side of things (and started watching LMG).

Is there really this "OMG, I must rush out and buy the hot new processor!" attitude in the world?

Like, I get the tech reviewer channels, because having stuff first, you get reviews and tests and whatnots, and that's the basic model of journalistic type entertainment....

But for others...is it just, "I want new power!"?  Have you been waiting on them for work? Is it just a big tinkering mindset?

I guess I'm just curious about why you reading this might be rushing out to get/order the new processor on the market.

On what basis would you say there is? If you're wondering why people are asking a lot of questions on the new stuff it's probably because they've been waiting for this launch to upgrade. Maybe they've needed to upgrade for a few months but decided to hold on and see what AMD had up its sleeve.

As for why I personally would be considering an upgrade, my desktop's cpu is 8 years old and starting to show its age and for the first time in over a decade AMD offers great value with no compromises and a significant upgrade over what I have.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

There just seems to be a lot of excitement around this release. More than I would have thought for just a new processor.  It's an alien world to me..just trying to learn about things that excite other people.

It's rare when the underdog wins... It happened to a smaller degree when the Athlon XP / Barton was beating Pentium 4 and Pentium D, and when AMD licensed the EV6 bus from DEC/Alpha and released the AMD Athlon (in slot format)... Beating the 1 GHz was quite a feat.

In general there's rare situations where lots of people want something... I remember the Windows 95 launch and Windows 98, it was really something, a jump from DOS and text mode stuff to graphical interface and plug and play.

For me, the reasons are more fanboy related than anything else, and i geuss everyone likes to see the underdog win.

In all seriousness tho, i have a 1700 and was planning to upgrade to a 3700x simply because that means i don't have to buy a new mainboard + cpu compared to what i have now.

If i had bought an intel when i build the 1700 system, that would have been the case.

So yes, i'm hyped that AMD managed to 'beat' intel but keeping upgradebility an option.

Unraid system: Epyc 7352, 24/48, 96GB ECC buffered @2666mhz, 2x GT710, GTX1050Ti

People have been waiting and holding back their purchase for up to 8 months waiting for Zen 2.

There is a reason why they are buying it.

That and older core i5 CPUs are now essentially going obselete for gaming in modern titles

There is a lot of buzz around Zen 2 for a couple of reasons.

1:  Its both gaming and workstation CPUs that offers a lot more than its competitor - Intel.  Here in UK region you can get R5 3600, a 6 core/12 thread CPU for 200GDP (250USD) and pair it with 1st gen Ryzen motherboard.  Intel owners that only dream about it.

For the same price, Intel offers 9600k, a 6core/6thread CPU that is already being chocked by modern CPU heavy games, and it virtually unusable for higher workloads like streaming or professional soft such as Blender.

On high end, R9 3900x is a 12 core/24 thread CPU. Intel counterpart (9900k) offers 8 cores / 16 threads for the same price. 3900x offers more performance than 9900k in professional workloads. AMD also revealed R9 3950x, a freaking 16 core/ 32 thread AM4 CPU. For comparison, you would have to go into Intel Xeon territory in order to find something similar. But Xeons are pure workload CPUs that require special enthusiast level motherboards and a lot of cooling. And obviously it costs a fortune.

2: Its competition. In competition is there always a winner - thats us. With AMD releasing high end CPUs that beat Intel's chips, Intel is forced to drop the prices and step up their game. That means we will be seeing a nice fight between two industry giants, and have a profit from it.

Main system: Ryzen 7 7800X3D / Asus TUF Gaming B650-Plus / G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO 32GB 6000Mhz / Zotac RTX 5090 SOLID OC/ x2 WD_BLACK NS770 2TBs/ Corsair HX1000i/ NZXT H5 Flow

I prefer intel over AMD, and am not planning on switching sides after dumping 400€ on an intel CPU and motherboard just last year, but I'm really excited to see what AMD can come up with. A friend of mine is playing on Lenovo gaming laptop and it's garbage, so he might be able to get a great PC soon.

Personally I'm waiting for the new Navi GPUs. I've gotten sick of nvidia just cranking up the prices, since getting a 2070 isn't an option for me, as much as I'd like to buy one.

My stuff:

Spoiler

CPU :  Intel i5 8400 | GPU : MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

RAM : 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 @ 3600MHz

Headset : Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro 250Ω w/ AT2020USB+

Monitor : Acer XF240H @  144Hz

I don't think as a whole there is a "OMG GOTTA HAVE IT!!!" like there is with consoles, phones, etc. I do think there are a lot of people who do like having the latest and greatest CPU and will upgrade every years to keep their rig top of the line. (K|ngp|n comes to mind) but it does add another layer where there will be people who will want to upgrade from an older Intel/AMD architecture and Zen 2 offers a great way to do it with more cost efficient CPU's and manufacturers also offer the motherboards cheaper compared to the Intel variant. (I myself won't be upgrading since my AMD build is barely a year old and it will hold up for years to come)

Like many others I love seeing what AMD is doing, especially since I started AMD, realized the FX6350 was crap and quickly sold that gear to get an i5 setup that was leaps and bound better. I've now gone from the i5 to my current Ryzen build. If AMD continues this path I will stay with AMD

I'm going for the change because my i5 wasn't a great call for me at the time especially when I paid almost 300$ the i7 would have done me a lot better and now I need more threads and a small single core gain doesn't hurt.

I wanted the 12 core but not for 499$ its probably between a 6 or 8 core.

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a Wii and PS2 as your only consoles.

In 2012 you could buy i5-2500 for ~800 PLN, in 2017 you could buy i3-6100 for 650 PLN, both are more or less the same performance, this month, I've seen R7 1700 for 500 PLN and it's 3 times faster than the above CPUs. After years of stagnation we have revolutionary progress in how fast CPU can you buy in the PC category.

This is me,  I am still sitting on an i5 3550.  It still does everything I need, but I want to start video editing this year.  A Ryzen build has been on the cards for me for a few months now.   It made lots of sense to wait and see how the chips would pan out before buying.

As I said above, I have been on a i5 system since 2012,  I want to upgrade but the i5 still games reasonably well (1080p).  This generation of Ryzen is coming at a very sweet time for many people who bought i5/i7 systems 8 years ago due to the nature of tech lasting much longer than traditionally it once did.

Also it's very exciting to see a new process and architecture mature and grow against Intel which has frankly become quite predictable of late.  It's like a small injection of that excitement we used to get 20 years ago when building a pc.
