NVIDIA or AMD?

another_member

Hello,

I have been looking at an AMD Radeon RX 580 and now I'm wondering if there are any possible downsides to using AMD and whether there is a reasonable NVIDIA alternative for about the same money. I'm just trying to get the best performance I can for a budget of 200 to 250€ budget.

Thanks,

Not for that price bracket. The RX 580 is a great card. If you can, you could get a used Sapphire Nitro+ card for like $110 on eBay.

I morally object to Nvidia and the way they basically force their poor implementations of features into things simply because it works on their cards and not on AMD, or just performs worse on AMD than Nvidia.

AMD has a lot of their own counter-technologies that work better on both cards but Nvidia has a chokehold on the industry. If you aren't needing CUDA cores and don't want the biggest baddest card, I'd go AMD.

250 Euros puts you very firmly into used Fury X territory if going used doesn't bother you.

4. Not sure about going used yet. Any tips?

Hell, I'm pretty sure that puts you into 1070 territory.

Not much to really say for going used other than look out for sketchy sellers. If you use eBay quite a bit, then hopefully it wouldn't be too hard to notice but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to shoot us a thread for it.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Nope, I do not specifically need CUDA cores.

Ok, seeing as I dont have the money for those RTX cards, I might go AMD.

In games, there's no downside. Both using the same Direct X engine, so it's down the the horsepower.

There is some downside in productivity apps, which optimized for one or the other.

580 is a nice card, but if you're buying new, it's not worth it, already 2 generations behind (vega & navi).

You can find it use for around $130 and it's the best bang for that money.

If you want something new, i suggest waiting for Navi or get 1660.

Other used card on that price is vega56 or 1070.

Whats the story with navi? Will there be an option in the 250€ price range? Until now, I had thought that navi was going to be more high-end, but i could be wrong.

Go with nvidia if you like to pay more for less at that price point.

But honestly, I'd wait a few more weeks until the RX5700 comes out and see what pricing is like for them... and if it prompts price cuts on other cards... Never buy anything so close to a new product launch.

System 1: Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro, Ryzen 5 2600X, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz, Sapphire 5700XT, 250GB NVME WD Black, 2x Crucial MX5001TB, 2x Seagate 3TB, H115i AIO, Sharkoon BW9000 case with corsair ML fans, EVGA G2 Gold 650W Modular PSU, liteon bluray/dvd/rw.. NO RGB aside from MB and AIO pump. Triple 27" Monitor setup (1x 144hz, 2x 75hz, all freesync/freesync 2)

System 2: Asus M5 MB, AMD FX8350, 16GB DDR3, Sapphire RX580, 30TB of storage, 250GB SSD, Silverstone HTPC chassis, Corsair 550W Modular PSU, Noctua cooler, liteon bluray/dvd/rw, 4K HDR display (Samsung TV)

It all depends on what you are targeting.

Honestly, I really love my RX 580 for 2560x1080 / 1920x1080 gaming.

It's even good enough to let you dip your toes into VR.

Honestly, the RX 580 is a great card, especially if you can find one today for under $200.

However, once you want to go beyond that, Vega 56 has been consistently on sale for $300USD~ and it is totally worth it.

Beyond that, you will want to go nvidia.

I would love to push the Radeon VII, but unless you are doing content creation workloads where the Radeon VII trounces even the RTX Titan, the RTX 2080 can be had for the same price or cheaper and yield you 5-10% better performance overall in gaming. You will also get a way better cooler.

AMD Ryzen 7 @ 3.9ghz 1.35v w/ Noctua NH-D15 SE AM4 Edition

ASUS STRIX X370-F GAMING Motherboard

ASUS STRIX Radeon RX 5700XT

Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum Keyboard

Logitech G903 Mouse

Oculus Rift CV1 w/ 3 Sensors + Earphones

I missed your budget in your original post. I'm sorry!

For that range, yeah you are looking at GTX 1660s and Vega 56s.

Personally, I would go with Vega 56 if possible.
