Upgrading from my old i5 4440 CPU

Hey guys,

I want to upgrade to CPU (and motherboard) because it's getting really old (5 years) and I'm starting to feel it.

So my specs at the moment are:

  • Intel® Core™ i5-4440

  • Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ (8GB)

  • 8GB RAM DDR3

  • Asrock B85M-HDS

  • Corsair VS450

  • 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD

I was thinking of buying a Ryzen 2200G , but then I wondered if it makes sense to buy an APU if I already have an RX 480. But then, even as a CPU the R3 2200G seems to be a great price for it's performance.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Why do you want to upgrade?

Without knowing the reason I can't really recommend anything specific.

It's mostly because the CPU is running slower than before wich makes my pc less smooth.

Also, I use my PC for a bit of gaming so it has to be powerful enough but nothing crazy (I play mostly F1 2018 and World of Tanks). I also program a little bit but that should be a problem performance-wise.

Yes, I plan on buying a CPU, a motherboard and RAM.

It should not be slower than before that might be a problem can u check clocks and temperature during some heave tasks like gaming???

In that case you should wait for the upcoming Ryzen 3000 CPUs and then upgrade to a Ryzen 3600.

It should launch on the 07th of July for 199USD.

If you want to spend a little less, you could go for the Ryzen 3400G. Same launch date, but only 149USD.

Here a picture of the upcoming Ryzen 3000 CPUs:

I'm mostly wondering if it's not a waste of money to buy an APU if I already have an RX480, or if I could benefit from both at the same time.

You should aim for a Ryzen 5 1600 at least the Ryzen 3 2200G is just a Ryzen 3 1200 rebranded with the APU, you won't be upgrading but merely side-grading at this point as our current i5 and the r3 2200G both are 4c/4t processors with similar frequency and IPC.

A Ryzen 2200G won't perform much better than your current CPU, and I'd encourage you to go with something at least Ryzen 2nd gen. You could wait until the launch of Ryzen 3000 and look at the used market for a Ryzen 5 2600/X for relatively cheap.

There won't be any real benefit from having both at the same time.
