Delidding Questions

Hey,

I have my i7 8700k for almost a year and now, running 4.7 GHz on 1.37v. Lately (especially now in Summer) the CPU gets really hot and loud which is really annoying with Open-Back Headphones. It revs up to 95c already by only Alt-Tabbing and or opening programs. Even in idle the CPU sits on over 40c [with 18c room temps (and if I have all fans on full speed the cpu is on ~36c)]. I have a Fractal Design Meshify C with 2 intake top, 2 Intake front (pwm) and 1 exhaust. The Cpu Cooler is a Dark Rock Pro 3.

I had reapplied the thermal paste already, tried different fan setups and lowering the voltage(gets even hotter for some reason or just crashes when stress testing).

1. Does it help with stability of overclocks?

2. Do I need to re-apply it 6-monthly/yearly? (read many different opinions/experiences on that)

3. Might it be just an unlucky CPU to begin with?

I'm asking these questions because of the hassle it would be to get to the CPU and replace the tim including the waiting time :3

One more thing. It wasn't that bad always actually. Last Summer I did indeed not have these problems.

Any help/experience is appreciated!

Note:

So I tried some things by watching the der8auer oc guides with the exact same parts. I changed the voltage to 1.3v, Long Duration and Short Duration Package Power Limit to 4095, CPU Core/Cache Current Limit Max at 255.75, disabled BLCK Aware Adaptive voltage and changed LLC to Level 6.

With that I did Cinebench R20 = 3478(300 points higher than every run before); Prime 95 Blender and Large stayed at ~70c but small instantly thermal throttled the CPU. In AC Origins I finally was able to play the game with only 70c, it always is on 100% Cpu Usage for some reason but finally it didnt rev up the PC.

cpu shouldn't be hitting 90s just from opening programs. Either your thermal paste application was poor, but more likely your cpu cooler isnt making enough contact.

Take of the cpu cooler, reapply thermal paste & tighten the cooler as much as you can by hand. don't use a screwdriver

DRP 3's mount is supposedly rocket science, make sure it's on well.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

The first time I installed it had my problems, but I did manage to get it right and it is screwed on tight. Even had a little thermal paste spillage when I did it.

I think the "silent" profile you're using is simply trying too hard to be silent. Is it that much more unbearably loud at normal? The DRP3 is a pretty quiet cooler.

To be fair it really makes a difference with Open Back headphones in specific scenarios. That's how I also realized something changed to begin with because it wasn't that loud last Summer with the same settings.

I don't use open backs, so I don't know how it is. But is normal bearable? It, if nothing else, will probably normalize at a specific RPM until you put a stress on it rather than ramp up randomly.

Changed it to standard. In idle there is no difference, but opening or starting programs like Firefox already makes the fans go nuts. Has gotten better with the mentioned changes that I added in the description tho. The temps dont reach 90~95 by only opening programs now, it goes to 70c max from testing now and the Volume is quite lower aswell.

Those massive temp fluctuations are still weird... Is one core hotter than the rest? Did you apply the thermal paste properly?

As I mentioned, when I applied the thermal paste and put the cooler on it, some of the paste leaked and I had to remove it. That's why I'm quite sure that can't be it.

It's fine. That's why I wondered if a delid might make a significant difference in my case. I really love my headphones way to much to not try to get it fixed some way. Seeing as a delid isn't expensive or as difficult with the right tools anymore.
