If you are going to paint aluminum you need to use self etching primer first, other wise the paint WILL NOT STICK. (I did this on my aluminum boat, the paint on the inside seats flaked off so easy, but the paint on the outside where I used the SELF ETCHING PRIMER has held up for about 3 years now. (granted I used heavy equipment oil based paint from a farm supply store.) I got my primer from Ace Hardware. I could only find it in spray cans locally but I have seen it sold by the gallon on-line.

So I have a phanteks Evolv X as well and want to modify the front and top panel (2-3mm aluminium). I'll have a company cut the panels with a CNC machine, but the edges will be bare aluminium. I want to paint the edges yellow. So I can't just spray the whole panel with the self etching primer, I would remove the black paint, right? In theory I could use a little brush to spread the primer along the edge and paint it afterwards with the desired color?

You priming it is ideal but you can use something as simple as an enamel paint to go along the edge or even something as simple as a paint marker to hide the bare aluminum.

Even when I painted my Corsair Air 240's steel pieces I masked off, lightly sanded, and used primer to ensure the paint would stick. Definitely recommend going this route if you're working with Aluminum. Using automotive engine paint works well on most metal computer cases, but for plastics you always want to spot-test on a small area in case the paint reacts with the plastic.

For plastic I've had good luck Krylon for plasic, still would recomend primer for plasic first though.
