Networking question

Go to solution Solved by scottyseng,

You'd need a basic 5 port unmanaged network switch. They're pretty cheap. I use a few of the netgear 8 port ones myself (GS108).

I was going to order a cat6a cable to run from my modem to my desktop but am wondering if it is possible to buy a "splitter" so I can hook up my xbox and maybe a second computer so I don't have 3 wires running from my modem

If it is possible to get a switch device I would change the cat6a cable to a cat7

Just wondering what the switch device would be called and how expensive it would be

As above, just an unmanaged switch 5/8 ports, connect that to the cable running from your router, then connect everything in that room to the switch. I have both netgear and tplink 8 port switches, that are less than £20 each most of the time.

Cat 7 and 8 are not officially recognized standards. Also keep in mind Cat6a is rated for 10 Gbps at 100m. The fact is 10 Gbps gear is still expensive. While some of it has come down it still costs more than most people want to spend. Also, devices like game consoles are not going to have 10 Gbps support any time soon. So its no really worth investing in. Unless you want a dedicated connection between lets say a PC and server.

Truthfully your better going with a standard cat 6 cabling. You can get a 5-8 port swtich for dirt cheap. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A121WN6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I picked this guy up a few weeks ago. Look $20.

Im fairly sure there is a "Standard" just TIA/EIA dont recognize the standard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_11801#CAT7). And seeing how they govern the standards for telecommunications, there lack of approval just means these cables will never been fully adopted.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Ignore this part: There are switch devices which seperate a 8 wired cable into two 4 wired cables which you can use for dual 100mbit lan (or telephony) but you'd have to set them up on both ends and you would decimate your connection speed.

The switch device you are looking for is a ..... "Switch".

4 Ports (or more)

Gigabit

Any manufacurer will do, you'd probably end up with netgear or tp link.

didn't want to change cat6a to cat7, it was more allowing the max bandwith possible so it would't effect me placing a switch inside of the setup

the cat6a cable is $5 more expensive than the cat6 cable at the 30m distance (as i thought 10 would be to short but if i put a switch in it would then allow me to use the 10m cat7 cable {above})

There is no official CAT7 as mentioned above (At least TIA/EIA). There might be CAT7 products, but without a real standard they might as well be normal CAT6A cables with the label of "CAT7"

I'd just stick with the CAT6A cable.

Hey Scotty, as you seem knowledgeable in this area, what does 10/100/1000 mean

I thought it means mb/s, but why not just say it supports up to 1000mb/s?

Again Cat7 is not a recongized standard. Many companies are fucking customer's over by calling their cables Cat7, but they are not the best quality cables. So stick with the Cat6a cable if you need 10 Gbps, or Cat 6 if 1 Gbps is fine. Also remember Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a can do their max speed up to 100m. So as long as your within that distance you good. If you need faster speeds on your network, look in to Fiber Optic.

Because networking equipment works at 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps. That is how things roll. Thats why if you have a damaged cable you might be stuck at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, as you need all 8 wires to do 1 Gbps. So they show it as 10/100/1000 to indicate it can do those speeds. Now that being said, those speeds are the common ones in consumer gear. Enterprise gear can go faster. But thats when you get in to Fiber and SFP ports and such, things I have little knowledge of.

What you really have to decide is how fast you need the links between two points to be. Remember that All items on a network have to support the speeds that you want other wise you wont get those speeds. So if you want 10 Gbps between lets say a PC and Sever, then each the PC and Server need a 10 Gbps Networking card and you need to use Cat6a cabling or Fiber, if you have a switch in the mix, then it has to have 10 Gbps ports. Truthfully you do need 10 Gbps in most cases. Most PC, Laptops, game consoles and TV's dont support those speeds. While PC's can be upgraded with 10 Gbps cards, its just not worth it unless you need a high speed link between that computer and another device with 10 Gbps capabilities. Remember 10 gbps network gear does not help make your internet faster.

Would I be able to go into the switch with a cat6a cable and then go to the devices with a cat6 cable ?

I'm just trying to make the connection to the modem as fast as possible?

Cat 5e would work for that. It can do 1 Gbps as well. Cat6a is just overkill and not needed. That being said. Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a all use RJ45 connector and can be used with any devices.

Just remember your modem/router/ Computer probably cant do more than 1 Gbps. On top of that your ISP is most likely not giving you more than 1 Gbps.

Ok, so any cat6 or cat5 cable will do

The reason for the wiring is to remove the packets lost when playing games as my ping and speed are both fine, then it starts dropping packets and it all goes to shit haha

Hoping it is the wireless connection that is the problem and not some other reason

Any Cat6 or Cat5e. You need to make sure its Cat5e or above. Cat 5 can only do 100 Mbps.

Well, if you want to test if it's the wireless, you can temp move a PC next to the modem, plug it with a cable, and see if that fixes it (It should).

I'm more curious how you plan to route 10m of cable in your house. haha

When there is a will there is a way. I got a 50 footer wrapped around my room connected to a switch, for my Plex Transcode box and HD Homerun.
