Problem with old AM2+ Build

Hello!

My friend bought himself a new CPU. After installing the new CPU, the following happened.

His PC could not boot up with more than 1 RAM sticks.

CPU: Amd phenom II 940 black edition
MOBO: Ga ma770-ud3 rev1.0 (Bios F8)

He tried this with many types of RAM, it only worked with one stick, once he puts 2, PC wont boot.

His old CPU: Amd phenom x4 9550

The new CPU is supported with that mobo. He tried CMOS reset and that didn't help.
Once he puts the old CPU back, then he can use all RAM slots once again.
Any idea what is causing this problem? He tried to look for possible solutions but failed.

Possible dead memory controller on the new CPU. Is it used?

I think the memory controller is going bad. (Maybe the reason why it has been sold) dunno for sure tho. Maybe someone has an other idea

Sounds like a dead memory controller, can you check the CPU for any bent pins and/or see if you can get a refund from it's previous owner or at least get some money back?

Have you tried using the old CPU in the socket and see if that fixes the problem, if it doesn't might be a problem with the motherboard if it does, CPU is probably the problem. (edit - I will be honest I didn't read your trouble shooting steps (It's been a long day))

sounds like a CPU problem try get your money back but your motherboard can support that CPU on that bios update, but it does look like it's still outdated so update it and maybe that might help (doubt it but it's a good idea to keep the bios up to date anyways so can't hurt)

The owner of "too many" computers, called

He did get the money back luckily. Also was able to keep the CPU.

CPU possibly damaged.

Look at the Pins on the back.

And is the latest BIOS on the Board?

Glad he got the money back. If any of the pins are bent then that might be causing that.

It won't be a BIOS issue since the problem only occurs when he uses two RAM sticks

Spoiler

noice

Are the memory sticks identical or at least have the same speed/latency? some mobos of that era refuse to work with different speed sticks.

Pins were fine.

he did get to test the CPU on a different motherboard and yep. the CPU is damaged. it couldn't even boot with the different am2+ mobo.
