are M.2 SATA and NVMe

SirBond

hello

What is the best options to use M.2 SATA and NVMe is it to run a OS or is it to run the installed programs. Or a 3rd options? how do I use the different hdd (M.2 SATA and NVMe and SSD) to get the best performence

I hope someone knows something about that.

If you just want an OS boot drive for common usage the "performance" of SATA3 and NVMe will be much of the same, therefore you can potentially save yourself some cash by going with SATA3.

But if you find a good deal on a NVMe you can go with it too, it really does not matter, the jump from SATA3 to NVMe is pretty much non-existing unless you have a very specific storage intensive 'professional level' task at hand... sadly it's no mind blow as it is going to SSD from HDD.

Is it a Samsung 850 EVO SSD 250GB 2.5" SATA3. Or is it 860 EVO M.2 SATA SSD 2TB SATA III. When you say SATA3?

You'll need a SATA 3 cable if you'll use a 2,5 inch SSD like these:

1169504_ssd-crucial-bx500-240-gb-3d-nand

If you use a M.2 however there are no cables involved, you just fit it in the connector:

SATA3 cables are the cables you hook regular SATA HDD's and DVD players to.  SATA3 is a more specific name, but they're all just "SATA" cables.  For example...

If this is a performance system, I prefer using an NVME drive for the OS and applications.  That is, obviously, assuming the computer can support an NVME drive.  SATA drives, regardless of the interface, are maxed out around 550 Mbps.  The fastest NVME drives can hit 3500 Mbps, or a little higher.  Even budget NVME drives can hit 1700+.  I have an 960 Pro 512GB NVME m.2 drive for my C.  I have an 860 Evo 1 TB SATA m.2 drive for my Steam Library.  Then, I have a 2 TB Seagate hybrid drive for data storage and photo editing drive.

Those are their best case scenario specs, yes.  But the argument is that NVMe doesn't give a REAL WORLD advantage, in a system.  Boot times and program start ups on SATA are the same as NVMe.  You need a specific use case for NVMe.  Gaming isn't it.

If you want NVMe to have the best and fastest regardless, sure.  But it's not a benefit for most of us.

I normally would agree in a benchmarks vs real world discussion....but not in this case.  You are talking about a multitude of difference in the performance, and yes, you can feel it in everyday use.  Perfect example, the work laptop I'm typing this on is a Latitude 7280 that supports both types of m.2 drives.  There is a noticeable difference between the Intel SATA drive that it shipped with as compared to the Samsung 860 EVO NVME drive that I upgraded to.

One could argue that it seems faster because my mind knows it was an upgrade.  However, I went back to the SATA drive (had another use for the NVME) and I've regretted it.  Boot times are slower, opening apps are slower, and the Fedora VM I run on the laptop is slower all around.

In short, there is more than just a benchmark difference between the two.  Given that prices are falling, if the opportunity is there to use NVME...I say go for it.  No reason not to.

First, what Intel SSD are you talking?  Was it an Optane drive helping out a HDD?

Second, the 860 EVO is a SATA drive not an NVMe.  Did you mean 960?

SATA SSDs open programs almost instantly (under a half second) and provide boot times sometimes in the single digits of seconds.  NVMe has been shown to do similar.   There are too many files to be accessed and processed for the pure speed of an NVMe drive to make it's raw power felt.

Never had an HDD in this laptop.  No slots for it...so no Optane of any kind.  The SATA SSD is the OEM equivalent of the Pro 5400 series (I believe), which is an SSDSCKKF512H6.

Yes, that was a type.  It was a 960 EVO.  Had to check my inventory spreadsheet.

I've been an advocate of SSDs since I bought my first Crucial C300 64 GB drive.  I'm just telling you there's a difference in actual, day to day usage between the two.  I am in no way bashing regular SATA drives, but there's a reason that newer specs come along.  NVME isn't just a benchmarker's wet dream.

Again, I am not bashing SATAs and they do provide the benefits you mention in your last statement.  But, NVME drives do all of that...just a little faster.  You can definitely tell and feel a difference between the two.

Do I really "only" need a Drive at (512GB) 960 Pro 512GB NVME m.2 drive to run win10? isn't that to little for a C  drive  with all the updates there is today?

I can't answer that for you specifically, but 512 GB should be more than plenty of space.  Many of my corporate laptops ship with 256 GB drives, and my users are perfectly fine running them with Windows 10, years of documents, Office, and all of their development apps.

For my personal tower mentioned above, the only reason I split out my games is because they do take up a lot of space.  I currently have about half of that 1 TB filled.  If you plan to install a lot of games and only want one hard drive, possibly 512 GB isn't enough.

Windows doesn't take more than 50GB.  Win10 on my work machine is at 26GB for example.

Windows doesn't take more than 50GB.  Win10 on my work machine is at 26GB for example.

Okay.

Another questions. Does I make damaged the hardware. If I have an "overkill" PSU. let's say pcpartpicker.com says that is fine whit a 750W PSU and use a 1000W PSU?

And what is the advantage to have 2 gfx. Will I get some really good advantage to have that if I'am not a hardcore gamer?

No, more power doesn't hurt.  You only use what you need, it's not forcing more power to your parts.

2 cards is good only if supported, which many games do not.  Spend more on one card than 2 lesser.
