that drive is maybe one year old in a 2014 laptop! why did it die????????????? why not some thing old? also why am I dumb enough that even though I constantly have problems requireing new os I don't keep a backup???

Drives will die randomly. And that drive would be about 5 years old now, getting near the end of the practical lifespan

 

If you don't care about the data, just reinstall on the new drive, backups keep the files safe.

then get the drive swapped under warranty.

 

And id replace it with a ssd, much faster, won't faile with drops and shakes, lower power.

if its only one year old, this should be covered under warranty as a defect. Just try to warranty it.

it happens bro!!! some last a lifetime others don't make it 6 months.. i have had them last way more than i have had drive fail.
