My new rig Questions

Lucky Me

I am planning on buying a new computer in about 4 months and looking for the best buy/ best machine, I want a machine that can last for (let's say) 10 years. But I could replace parts in the future.

This computer is going to be used for (video/ photo) editing and playing World of Tanks (other games? What other games). I record the replays and put them on my own youtube channel (for fun)...

Here are my components:

  • Intel Core i9-9900K - Processor
  • Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master - motherboard
  • Samsung 970 EVO 1Tb M.2 - SSD
  • Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti - Graphics card
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32Gb - Memory
  • Corsair HX series HX850W V2 Platinum 80+ - Power supply
  • Noctua NH-D15 - Processor cooler
  • Fractal Design Define R6 - Case
  • Acer Predator X34P - monitor
  • ASUS SDRW-08U1MT - DVD burner
  • Silverstone FP37 - card reader
  • Chenbro SK41202 - 5.25in bay for front panel

Did I forget anything? (just some thoughts)

  1. I don't need extra HDD because 1Tb is enough (I use some external HDD for storage) or......?
  2. Memory without RGB is cheaper, so I probably will go for that (who needs RGB, right) Yes it is and replaced it
  3. Would the Corsair cooling be good enough for the i9-9900K processor? As answered, no!
  4. in the case are 3 120mm fans in the front and 1 120mm fan in the back. Would you replace the fans with Noctua fans? The cooler for the processor is going in the top... Different case now and this is out of the way.
  5. I am used to 3 monitor setup (at this moment I have 3 24" monitors) but want to reduce it to 1 big monitor, or would you use 2 smaller monitors so it is cheaper? (at this moment the Predator coast me €979)
  6. 4K would be great and I guess it can be done here.
  7. I have the LG G413 Carbon keyboard, Razer Deathadder mouse and Edifier R1280T speakers, Behringer U-Phoria UM2 with Behringer mic.

I don't want to spend more than needed but want a computer that does the trick for me, money would be around €4000. The setup above is about €4350 €4078, so a bit too much but that's why I posted here to see if you guys have better ideas to make it a bit cheaper without losing too much power. I hope that in about 4 months the prices will be dropped ?

true, but I don't want Ryzen... and about the planning. I am looking for a computer, in 4 months it only gets cheaper. I don't see why I should buy a much newer processor because the i9-9900K is the newest so far and when there would be a newer processor (or others things), it would make this one cheaper...

it means bad... a 9900k can pull around 200-280 watts on a good overclock. even for running stock i would get something like a z390 aorus

or if you want to stay inside asus a xi gene/apex/extreme

Why wouldn't you want Ryzen? The new generation (comes out in ~2 months) is pretty good for gaming, unlike previous

Could be, but I just want intel... Don't know why but I just want to. Why change a winning team, if it ain't broken......

The 9900K consumes a lot of power, needs good VRMs, needs extremely good cooling and has no upgradability at all.

Also, Ryzen is the winning team for a lot of places right now, in Mindfactory (a tech store from Germany) it's outselling Intel 2:1.

IF you want your rig to last 10 years, you need to look at AMDs and intels enthusiast sockets like LGA 3647, threadripper, and x299. A mainstream platform is not gonna cut it for the long haul.

As an example, there are still people using intels X58 platform that came out 10 years ago for gaming. That is the power of choosing a high end motherboards combined with cheap future upgrades.

Quote

At 4.5GHz, the i9-9980XE drew an additional 216W from the wall, putting the total power consumption at around 574W.

Jokes aside, yes an enthusiast platform is the best way. I'd go for X399 as it has upgradability to 3rd gen ThreadRipper

The goal for OP is to build a PC that lasts a long time. Unless power is extremely expensive where you live, it makes no sense to upgrade frequently to save on power consumption when most people pay 10-20 cents per kwh.

how do you cool a 600W CPU is my question

Just as it's too early to say how good or bad Ryzen will be, 4 months could be too early for you to say you don't want it. If Ryzen comes out cheaper and on par or better than the 9900K would you stick with 9900K for Intel's brand loyalty or pay less for something equivalent or better? Obviously, if Ryzen isn't as good, then don't go for it. But it's too early to say Ryzen will be an Intel 9900K killer just as it's too early to say it won't.

So why not buy a newer processor if it's cheaper and better/same? The 9900K is currently about $480 USD+, plus the cost of the MB. AMD boards generally cost less, and even if the processor is $400, it's $80 cheaper plus cost of the MB. Too many variables to say anything about pricing or performance.

...That is unless there would be a reason to stick with Intel over AMD if AMD offered something cheaper and competitive. My 2 cents, so I'll shush now.

As others have said, it's way too soon to start planning now. 4 months is a long time, new products are introduced, prices fluctuate, and we have the huge launch of Ryzen 3 coming up; if you're going to ignore it, then you could possibly be making a massive mistake. Blind brand loyalty makes absolutely no sense. If you have quantifiable reasons, then sure, go ahead.

It won't. RAM and SSD storage prices change all the time, not only in general, but via part per part, and sales pop up. Maybe something significantly better will be on sale when you're finally ready to build. There's absolutely no way for you to know that right now.

So far so good. I love to work to the end and with some help from you guys I came up with this setup SO FAR:

  • Intel Core i9-9900K - Processor
  • Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master - motherboard
  • Samsung 970 EVO 1Tb M.2 - SSD
  • Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti - Graphics card
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32Gb - Memory
  • Corsair HX series HX850W V2 Platinum 80+ - Power supply
  • Noctua NH-D15 - Processor cooler
  • Fractal Design Define R6 - Case
  • Acer Predator X34P - monitor
  • ASUS SDRW-08U1MT - DVD burner
  • Silverstone FP37 - card reader
  • Chenbro SK41202 - 5.25in bay

Of course, anything could change but it won't be much ?

  1. Intel because it handles Adobe a bit better (as a said in the first post)
  2. NVIDIA because World of Tanks loves it
  3. those two above because I love them and have a very good experience with them (why change a winning team)

So until the time is here.......

Thx for your post Lee. The thing is... I don’t like RGB. I am to old for that.

My next mission is to see if I can get it without the RGB. That’s why I love to plan these ideas a few months ahead.....

I am not a fan of RGB myself to be honest. One reason why I have a non windowed case.

The Alphacool Eisbaer LT360 or BeQuiet SilentLoop 360mm would be my 'non RGB' suggestion for liquid coolers then. Maybe look at the Phanteks P600S or Fractal Meshify S2 etc if you want a non RGB case.

Or if you want a big air cooler like the D15 you have selected (Or BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4) then I would swap out the Ram for some Corsair LPX or similar so that is fits under without any issues.
