Games crash to desktop. Tried almost everything

iamdarkyoshi

So I'm troubleshooting someone else's build right now, and I'm honestly at a loss.

Specs:

GTX 1050Ti

2x8GB DDR4

i3 6100

Asus Strix B250G gaming

Old 1TB HDD for the boot drive (I suggested he upgrade to an SSD...)

Windows 10 build 1803

Antec 650w Earthwatts PSU

Machine came into the store looking like this:

What I've tried:

Totally taking the machine apart and meticulously cleaning out all the dust (they live in a very dusty location where cars just kick up tons of dust)
While cleaning, I opened up the PSU to check for bloated caps, all were intact

DDU and fresh GPU drivers

Known good RAM

Known good GPU

Updating BIOS

Updating windows to build 1809

Checking HDD smart data (came out perfect)

Updating chipset and related drivers from asus's website

Verify integrity of game files in steam

Checking temps

After all this, games still crash to the desktop with no warning or error message. I've told him to try getting an SSD and doing a fresh install of windows, but that's about all I've got.

I'm at the end of my troubleshooting steps, aside from replacing more parts like the motherboard or power supply. I can't imagine a 650w unit from antec would have troubles with a 1050Ti and i3, and I've never really had any issues with asus motherboard, not like this one...

Any other troubleshooting steps I should try before replacing parts?

I had basically the same problem with a buddies pc, situation similar - super dusty etc etc. I swapped out the power supply before testing it cause it was some shitty cheap unit, when I turned it on and tried running a game it stopped acting up.

So I'd definitely give a new power supply a try

Also I audibly gasped at that picture, just needed to share that

I second testing a new power supply. If you don't want to rip it right out to test it you can usually reach the cables from one pc into the other to just try it with another one.
