How to transfer SSD from old laptop to new laptop?

AcheronHades

I know how to physically transfer the SSD, I actually replaced the HDD that came in the laptop originally with a 512 GB SSD. What would I need to do on the software side of things to make the SSD work as the new system's drive, and retain all of the old settings and files? Full Disclosure, I have not purchased the new laptop yet, but I am in the process of looking.

You should back up your personal data somewhere else, do a fresh install of windows on the SSD and install the drivers for the new laptop

ok, thank you. How would I transfer all my settings, though? would I just have to manually reset the settings?

Depends on what settings?

If windows settings then you can enable windows settings sync, so the new laptop will have the same wallpaper and settings as the old one.

If you mean program settings then you can transfer the config files, which are usually in documents.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

1. Remove SSD from laptop A.

2. Insert SSD into laptop B.

3. Boot.

4. ...

5. Profit.

You don't have to do any of that, if you're going from a somewhat recent Intel system to another Intel system literally all you have to do is plug in the new SSD and boot from it.

Microsoft will adjust drivers and registry entries automatically for you.

how recent is somewhat recent? My system is around 6-7 years old, and I am considering switching to a ryzen-based system, would that affect anything?

What processor your current laptop uses? What Operating system?
