RTX Woes

Imagine if Nvidia made a 2060 without ray tracing. This would bring down the price a bit, and it would shed the hopeless prospect of running real time ray tracing on a 2060.

 

The 2060 is really the only option for me. I have $350 usd to spend on a gpu, and the rtx 2060 is the most powerful card for that price.

 

The 2060 is a great card, I just can't stop thinking that it could have been even cheaper than it already is if it didn't have the RTX branding on it.

 

What do you guys think?

Good post!  But remember the 10xx series was 2 years old when the RTX came out, so the technology has advanced, and there is nothing we can do about it ya know...

they wouldn't make non-RTX models because then everyone would buy those instead. Still, the 2060 is prices accordingly as if it were non-RTX, a step up from the 1660 ti even without RTX on.

The 1660 and 1660ti is a step below the 2060. The 1660ti is comparable to a 1070 and the 1660 is somewhere between a 1060 and a 1070. The 2060 is slightly more powerful than the 1070ti for gaming.

Even though they push ray tracing pretty hard, the tensor cores make the cards more versatile.   If your not interested in RT or AI on any scale then don't bother with the RTX lineup.

I'm expecting navi to be that answer. Hopefully AMD can put something out that is 1080/2070 performance for around $300, that would take my money instantly.

Just buy a used 1070 Ti/1080 for now. 8GB > 6GB RTX.

The problem is that nvidia has a track record of not supporting previous gen hardware, so the rtx series will probably be faster in most games when compared to their pascal counterparts.

the 2060 itself is a decent deal, just ignore the RTX label, though nvidia kinda screwed over the 2070 and 1660 ti buyers by coming out with cards that has better bang4buck after their releases. There were even 2060s for 320usd at launch before the 1660 ti came out, then when the 1660 ti came out it just didnt make sense to sell the 2060 for 320usd anymore.

He disproved the common misconception that Nvidia nerfs their old cards. What is true is the fact that newer cards will be more optimized for newer games. Eventually, the older architecture will be outdated and wont run as well as it could due to lack of driver updates.

They will still get driver updates so that isn't a problem.

 

The real issue is the newer games as they come out will be more GPU dependent and need the technology that is built into the newer GPU's.

 

But the older cards will still run the games, just not as fast as the new cards will due to the newer technology built in.

 

And the new generation RTX cards are MUCH faster than their GTX counterparts.

 

I have both the GTX 1080Ti and RTX 2080Ti as an example, both EVGA FTW3's and they aren't even close in performance, not really.

 

The RTX 2080Ti is a freaking monster.

 

Another example is in Shadow Of the Tomb Raider the 2080Ti at max settings with Ray Tracing on beats the GTX 1080Ti at the same settings at 1440P by like 20 FPS. And with Ray tracing off there is almost 100% difference.

 

I know because I ran the tests myself.

I keep mentioning that but people still buy a 2060 for only 1080p gaming... 

 

Why futureproof for things you don’t need?

 

AMDs cards are much better for just plain gaming, with the 1660s competing against them as new. Second hand 1080s still go for a high price for a reason!

You can usually find a good Vega 56, or even a decent Vega 64 at around $350 new with sales and such, they're also very nice cards.

The 2060 is actually better than the 2070 or 2080 in terms of gaming performance per dollar per frame @ 1080p.

 

BF5 runs at 120-140 FPS High preset without DXR/DLSS enabled. With those 2 enabled I still hit 100+ FPS, but I honestly think it looks better without the DXR enabled. The DLSS makes everything a tad blurry. It's $100 cheaper than a 1070ti and just as fast if not faster and includes RT cores.

At 1440p and 4k where GPU becomes the bottleneck instead of 1080p where your CPU usually is the culprit then the 2070 and 2080 cards are better.

Can't really beat that. For $350 you'll get a GPU that can powermod to be a lot better than a 2060 and you get 3 games instead of just one.

My 2060 is still returnable lol, might have to return it to buy that Vega.

I just don't understand how the Vega 56 is only 1 spot higher than the 2060 on the performance charts yet it says it beat the 2060 in 3/4 tests by ~20-50% in 3 of the 4 scenarios.

Actually it doesn't.

 

If you look at the real reviews it doesn't beat it but in very few games.

Or you spend $420 for the Nitro+ Vega 64. Newegg actually has them in stock at a reasonable price (they're usually $800+) and they're pretty much the best Vega card out there.
