I will be moving my computer to a new house soon, are there any suggestions anyone has to protect the PC from damage? It will be transported by car. I recall someones computer not working after transport on the NCIX forums.

I never had problem moving my computer in my car and it's pretty big (Switch 810). Maybe wrapping it up in a blanket and having someone watching for it not to fall or move. I had a friend in a bfbc2 team that dropped his computer in the stairs when moving, maybe something to watch too (even if it's obvious lol).

remove the graphics card and the cpu heatsink if it's a large tower based air cooler.

Yea definitely remove the graphics card, the pcb can snap if it is bumped around in the car. The part the connects with the pci-e slot could snap real easy in a scenario like that.

The graphics card is a MSI GTX 660ti, and the heatsink is an Hyper 212+. Case is Fractal Design Define R4. Think removing the graphics card is needed? When I ordered the PC from NCIX, the graphics card was left inside and was fine.

I have the original PC case box, and I would probably hold it down the entire time.

I would place the computer on the side and wrap it with blankets and place it in a spot where it won't slide around and bump stuff. Removing the cpu heatsink if it is a bulky air heatsink and the gpu is a good idea like mvitkun said. Secure you tool less drives using screws like Glenwing said and make sure that you secure all the loose cables if you have a non-modular psu so that the cables won't bump into parts and break them.

My brother has transported his Define R3 rig several hours in a car with a fully loaded bank of PCI express cards (some 1x cards) and a Hyper 212 Plus a few times and nothing bad has happened.

Heres an image of my rig:

Drives are screwed in, do I really have to take the graphics card out?

In a car should havce no issues, and yeah lay it on its side so the graphics cards are vertical, if you want take out the hard drives and put them into jiffy bags (bubble padded bags)

also check and make sure the screws for holding in the cards are tight.

I drove all the way across Canada in 2010 with my computer in the car and even over rough gravel roads (GPS took me short cut in Quebec, was like a rally stage lol) and it worked fine, when i moved back to Newfoundland later in the year i used a transport truck and my hard drives were corrupt and damaged, so in a car if your driving and its padded it should be fine.

main thing is hard drives, if they are quick release..

hope that helps, oh and now i am back in BC and got my PC mailed and everything worked as i took out the hard drives.

got to love Asus components

I am only moving it within 10km on paved roads, and I think the drives would be fine. I may take them out just for added protection. Ill just put it in the box horizontally.

take the graphics card out, and when you move keep it in the car with you if you can.

Place it on it's side, motherboard side down and I think you will be fine. That's how I transport my computer to LAN-parties and so on, nothing has died yet. If you have some custom water cooling going on, then you maybe have to be slightly more careful.

I don't understand all the complicated comments saying you should remove shit, and I don't understand why you're fretting about ten kilometers on a road. Seriously, your pc will be fine

I agree with Salmiakbal. Just lay it flat with the back side panel on the seat. If you want to be more cautious then fasten the seatbelt around it.

Just keep the car between the hedges and you'll be fine... and try not to go over 88mph, from my understanding of the back to the future movies, you may start time traveling if you do!
Every time i see your profile picture i get goosebumps. Damn you and your fruit fly!

I've moved my $2000 system several times without incident.  Just make sure everything is secure* and don't drive like a moron and you'll be fine.

*very very secure.  Yes, strap the system down in the car.

Laws only govern the honest.
