Windows 10 license transfer HELP!

Go to solution Solved by GoodBytes,

If you have an OEM license of Windows, you can't transfer it. You'll need to buy a new license.

Hi. Recently i just got a new computer with a unactivated windows 10 Pro. But my old computer have a genuine copy of window. So. I want to transfer the license to my new computer. I already try some method but it didn't work like

run "slmgr.vbs /upk" on administrator command prompt. But after I uninstall the product key I put this product key to my new computer. But it's said the key is invalid..

Anyone got some solution for me?

That will be great! Thanks for reading anyway :D

Try attaching the license to your Microsoft account and simply sign into your new computer with that account to transfer this license. You also have to remember if the license is for a different version of windows than what is on your new computer then they key will not activate that version of windows (IE Home vs Professional).

Did this computer come from a retailer or used? If it's a retailer then contact them and they should be able to get you a key for your computer.

Also the license that is on the computer with a valid license: did you buy this copy of OS separate or was it installed on that computer when you bought a pre-built? Pre-built license keys often can't be transfered.

No no not the old computer but the new one? Is it pre-built so you can contact best buy or whatever company you bought the new computer from about it?

The only thing that matters on the old computer is the version of windows license it has aka Windows 10 Home edition or Windows 10 Pro

Okay well here is what I recommend doing.

Since you've already done "slmgr.vbs /upk" on the old computer this is where you should pick up on your new computer.

All these steps will be done on the NEW computer.

Press Windows key + X then click command prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin)

At command prompt, type "slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx" with the x's being your code

Hit enter and you should receive conformation that it worked

Close the prompt and then proceed to reactivate by tele or Contact Support

Hit Windows key + R and type "slu.exe 4" and hit enter

Now select country and it will give you a toll free number to call and let them know what you're trying to do. They'll ask for your license key and then will give you a confirmation ID to reactive windows 10.

This toll free number is 24/7 and I would guess you're going to get an Indian guy with a strong accent so just be ready to maybe ask him to clarify what he said just in case you didn't really catch it. They're always super helpful and kind so don't worry about asking to restate what he said.

I'm sorry this whole post doesn't make sense. What number doesn't exist? The one that is given to you for the toll free number? For the US it's 855-801-0109.

If you are in a different country I can supply you with a different number OR just press the windows key and type "Get Help"

This will open a chat box with a Microsoft support specialist and explain you're trying to activate windows and they'll help you step by step.

One of these methods should work and if it comes down to it you can try to get a new copy of windows but we should try all other avenues before you try and spend money.

Don't use these numbers. They are toll numbers.

Use the ones above that instead.

They are:

001 800 2468 1668 or 001 800 4410560

If neither of these work just cancel and then press the windows key and type get help. Try talking with a MS specialist that way to fix these problems.

Since it was installed by a retailer that version of windows is meant to stay on that machine and can't be transferred.

This is so MS can sell retailers cheaper keys that are meant to stay only on one system.
