Hi, so a little while after buying my memory kit, which was a 2x8GB 16GB total kit of G.Skill Ram (3200C16D-16GTZR) for my motherboard (Asus ROG B350-F) I experienced crashing. Like the idiot I am of course the RAM isn't officially supported by my motherboard. If I set the RAM to the X.M.P. profile it came with, which automatically tunes it's CAS latency to 16 (not sure what timings are) and clocking it to 3200MHz, the system will run for a while until an inevitable crash.

My question is this, I'm currently in the process of selling the RAM but I'd personally rather avoid the awkward human contact of meeting someone. If anyone by chance knows a motherboard that officially supports the RAM, I'd really appreciate it. I thank everyone for any help offered and if there are alternatives that I could do rather than buying a new motherboard or RAM, I'm open to any ideas!

The B350-F is pretty forgiving of RAM not on its QVL, you just might not be able to overclock it all that well. You've got a few options:

  • Return the RAM if you're still in the window
  • Run the RAM at 2666, 2800 or 2933. It's Hynix NAND on a first-gen Ryzen board, so you're not likely at all to get 3200MHz out of it.
  • Run MemTest86 for 6-7 passes to make sure there's nothing wrong with the RAM. If it throws an error, RMA or return it. If it doesn't return any errors, you can safely sell it off.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

are you running the most up-to-date bios? a few people seem to have had the same issue as you but a bios update did appear to fix the issue, despite it still not being "officially" supported

Haha that's what I thought too and yeah my most current bios version is 4207 which was released only 3~ months ago

Did you check to see if your B350-F motherboard is running the latest BIOS (e.g. BIOS that has the AGESA update onwards) ??

That should be BIOS version 4009 and newer -- latest being 4207.

The AGESA update greatly improved RAM support on Ryzen.

EDIT:

If it isn't stable and even stock / JEDEC settings, then DRAM kit might be faulty.

The RAM still doesn't operate nicely at stock speeds so I was just gonna attempt selling it, I have it listed and still waiting for bites, been a week now. ? Figured I would use the money for a new motherboard or old DDR4 ram I have laying around that I haven't sold yet.

Yeah currently my BIOS is currently up to date with the 4207 update, and if my RAM is malfunctioning I can just get it RMA'ed?

Welcome to Hynix NAND on first-gen Ryzen. It'll run up to 2666MHz 99% of the time, but getting it to stabilize above that isn't guaranteed, and running it at 3200MHz is basically not going to happen on most boards.

Do you know what AM4 Boards would be able to support this RAM type, I think for me it'll just overall be cheaper buying a new motherboard rather than finding approved RAM for this one.

RAM has lifetime warranty.

If it IS faulty, you can MOST certainly get it RMA'ed.

From what I know G.Skill is pretty good with their RMA.

My two sets of Trident Z hasn't failed yet.

I personally don't think an RMA will do me any good if it's just a motherboard compatibility issue. Then again I could just attempt one to see if I got a bad apple out of the bunch ?‍♀️

First-gen Ryzen boards are/were notorious for not getting rated clock speeds on high performance RAM with Hynix NAND. I ran Corsair LPX memory with Hynix NAND on it on that same type of board and couldn't get it past 2933MHz on 3200MHz RAM. Buying a new B350/X370 board might not have any effect at all. The best bet, imo, is to return the RAM you have and pick up some Samsung B-Die NAND. Figuring out what's B-Die and what isn't can be tricky, but there are a number of guide charts out there on Reddit which tell you the NAND type for certain models. There's one general rule that, as far as I know, still prevails: any RAM with a frequency higher than 3200MHz is Samsung B-Die. When I was having RAM issues with my Ryzen boards, I just said f*ck it and bought a 3466MHz Corsair kit. No regrets.

Unfortunately returning isn't an option, I'm far past the return date without hope in sight other than selling the RAM off, listed it on 3 different sites and still nothing.? That and it's fancy and glowy, how can I give that up so easily? I figured that this RAM might work with a newer chipset on an AM4 motherboard, how I find that out is completely alien to me.

I've found out that sometimes even when the Mobo's own QVL list does not list a model, the mobo may be listed at ram's QVL list.

But when i check the model you provided, it seems B350-F is also not supported by G.Skill...

I'll probably just end up selling the motherboard and buying a supported one. I never even thought that ram had a QVL ?‍♀️

First-gen Ryzen. I don't know what was so badly gronked in the 300-series chipsets, but it seems like it was more or less fixed in the 400-series chipsets.

Looking at G.Skill's QVL I don't see any motherboard with a 400 chipset, it's all Intel boards. Is this R.I.P. for me? ???

i know a couple of people with that exact ram.  2 with asus rog strix b450-f and 1 with the asus rog strix x470-f and have had zero issues..maybe you just need to get a newer chipset?

i have 1 friend who got a b350 and had a hell of a time getting ram to work right...and he upgraded to a b450

Alright then that's my plan, cause I'm gonna buy a 2070 so I'm gonna be short on cash until I buy one but I see their sub $120 so that's good

Hey I got the same ram but the 32GB kit (2x16GB). Don't worry because welcome to Ryzen Gen1. I have a 1800x and Asus Crossfire Hero VI x370 with the newest bios, max it will go to is 3000 mhz tested stable with memtest64. Before I did a bios update I only could get 2666 mhz. So maybe the answer to your problem is a bios update.

Apparently getting 3200mhz or better on CL16 with Ryzen 1 is like the lucky 10%.
