NVMe virgin, what to expect

Will it hurt?  Will it be with the right one?  Will they love or leave me after?

 

Just picked up a 128gb NVMe m.2 drive - going to put it in my ASUS B350 Prime Plus board (wanted the experience, only $30 on sale) - I know that the specs on the board say that SATA 5/6 will be disabled when using an M.2 drive - does this mean only when using a SATA M.2 drive, and that an NVMe drive will use the PCIe lanes?  Or does a NVMe drive on this board still block SATA 5/6 ports?  Ive always thought I understood that NVMe and SATA are going to not share those SATA ports on the board effectively leaving me with 6 SATA ports still usable when an NVMe drive is installed?  Just confirming for when it arrives.

 

Is it better to do a fresh install or move the image over to the drive?  I am way okay doing a fresh install, its been over a year since its been done.

fresh install is your best option.

 

Any m.2 will disable those ports, its just how the board is layed out.

 

ALso id get a 256 or 512gb ssd if at all possible and return the 128gb. There faster, don't cost that much more and 128gb is getting kinda small for windows these days

Already on its way, I weighed getting the 256gb for $12 more and right now, its just about the experience - I have no actual NEED for an NVMe drive.  None at all lol.  My use case is gaming only and if Windows ever exceeds 128gb - I better be old and dead by then lol!  I have other SSD's and HDD's in that rig for storage

Honestly, you shouldn't experience anything faster than a regular SATA SSD.   Various YT'ers have tested it and Windows doesn't boot any faster or act any snappier. 

 

For $30, sure try it out.  Then return it and get a 240GB for the same price

Hate to say this cause you already made the purchase but if you are moving from an SSD to NVME drive you probably won't notice any difference at all. 

 

Also if you can close your current OS drive to the NVME drive that will be fine.

Ill keep it (Im a small business owner and cant do that cause I hate when it happens to me) but Ive seen many tests where it gets 12 second cold boots - that's what Im looking for - It takes 18-20 seconds right now but wanted the experience with the drive the most (not needing it for the speeds, storage aint the bottleneck anymore lol)

Looking for 2 things:  Experience (this is the most important for me, to be able to speak to the actual function, usage, installation, etc) and any improvement in boot time is sexy

You can use something like Clonezilla to clone your current OS drive if you desire (provided your new SSD has enough storage). Generally, I would rather do a clean install because its not that big of a deal to me.

 

In terms of performance, don't expect significantly higher speeds than your current SSD. Nvme drives BENCHMARK far higher, but in real world usage it's not as noticeable, especially compared to the transition from HDD's to SDD's a few years back. That said, I still bought a Nvme drive and love it.

You're going from POWER button to Windows asking for password/PIN?  Or fully into Windows?

LET ME REPHRASE - 18-20 seconds on restart - I should not have typed COLD BOOT - just got home and typing to fast lol

 

I want to see those crazy fast cold boots.

 

EDIT - I should really slow down...kids all over me lol - need to go pay attention to them - On Shut Down to Power Button - 18-20 seconds.  Restarts are much longer (because of non hibernation thing) - looking to improve restart times (cold boots)

Regular m.2 SSD would've had the same effect unfortunately in terms of experience, for a lot less money. And your boot times will likely be the same unless you do a clean install. Until all your programs are re-installed though, afterward it would likely feel the same. I have 3 PC's with regular m.2 SSD's and 2 with NVME and they all feel the same to me.

I'm getting around 18 seconds on my my Ryzen 7 1700 with 16 gigs of DDR4. Power button to desktop fully booted up(have 8 apps that load up at boot plus the normal MS sluggish crap) using a Samsung 970 V NAND SSD NVME M.2 500g. I can live with that. My understanding is that AMD only uses two lanes not four. Games and programs load waaaay quicker than my old school 1TB 7200rpm platter drive(but that's a given ). I kept the 1TB for internal back up and have a USB 3.0 4TB as a master backup for everything. 20k+ pictures, hundreds of hours videos, ect.
