Asus ROG Stric RX580 Running hot.

Hello all, I have a very strangely behaving RX580 STRIX.

 

Owned the card for about 2 years now, has always behaved this way.

 

At stock, the card throttles about 100MHz.

 

I have undervolted the card, and applied a much more aggressive fan curve (the stock one didn't allow the fan to go above ~70%...), and now it will maintain it's boost. It still gets hot, about 84c, but it's now at least stable.

 

Is this just how they work? I have already re-pasted the card once (which did help).

 

It is in a Fractal Define Mini C TG. Could the issue be a simple lack of air? I have the case set up with 2 intakes and 2 exhausts. CPU is plenty cold for it what it is (i5-8600K overclocked on 120MM AIO).

What clocks does it reach natively? And what fan RPM is it at?

RMA when it was under warranty?

 

84c with undervolt means that the cooler is bad or the paste is dry. I get better temp in a case with almost no airflow.

Low of 1441-1250, should be at 1360.

 

The stock fan curve is really, really dumb. Only at 50% fanspeed (do not know what RPM.)

Never RMA'd it, warrenty is expired now. Will be re-pasting.

My rx 580 overheated a LOT even when I had 4 push/pull fans running in simply because the front panel of my case starved it of air. Luckily, my Corsair case has a plastic front so I cut out a hole for the fans and added mesh/ rubber rim. This brought down temps by at least 10c for me.

Im gonna try pulling off the front panel and see if that helps

 

EDIT: Seems to have been a clogged dust filter, pulled it off and temps dropped 5c, another 5c with the panel off entirely.

 

I'll just leave things as they are for now, I'll be building a new system in a few months in a much better case.

If your GPU is under absolute max load for 30 minutes it might reach 85C but it should never go higher or you will end up frying the card

Thank you everybody! I did not mention it before, but in games I was seeing the same temps as in synthetics.

 

The temps in synthetics didn't change much, but I dropped 20c in games! Undervolting FTW!
