Frame rate unlocking bad for GPU?

Go to solution Solved by 91wow,

He doesn't know much about computers.

My friend was attempting to tell me that unlocking the frame rate would damage my graphics card.By this logic any game, or application in which the graphics card doesn't reach the frame rate cap would damage the GPU.

Any thoughts on why he would get this idea?

UWOTM8?

The hell does this mean?

Your avatar makes perfect sense.

That doesn't even make sense. I wouldn't take any computer advise from this guy unless they're some miss communication between what he said and what you interpreted.

He thinks that if you leave VSync on your GPU will get damaged

No OP that is complete bullshit

I know it's bullshit, i wanted to figure out what he was talking about.

He means that taking off the FPS limit will damage it.. Fool..

I worked that part out. if you read the OP, you would be able to tell that i was wondering what gave him that idea. i was thinking maybe he was talking about Core unlocking or something along those lines.

"If you run it at 99-100% all its life, it will die sooner"

Applicable to GPU fans, not GPU cores.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Uhh, wow. How would someone be able to think that and think they're correct? It's just plain stoopid.

I'm not sure whether or not you guys understand his friend's logic. By unlocking the frame rate, as in turning VSync Off, you are entitled to much more FPS than designed for your monitor's refresh rate (usually 60 Hz, therefore VSync usually renders 60 frames per second). What his friend thinks is : by turning VSync off, you are making your GPU work harder by rendering more frames; his definition of damaged isn't what the 'real' definition suggests, but more so that rendering more frames makes your GPU work harder and hotter, therefore 'reducing lifespan'. It's perfectly logical to think this, albeit a bit overboard to say that it would damage and break the GPU.

So, for those of you who called him an idiot -> (semi)facepalm for not understanding.

tl;dr - you can say his friend is CORRECT.

Big fat X. Read the OP again. His friend thinks that turning OFF VSYNC would damage the GPU.

unless the fans die and you keep going and then the cores literally melt i guess
