Small cheapish build for GF

Real_PhillBert

Hey guys, my girlfriend has been busting ass to change careers, she was a teacher but now finished up all her schooling and tests for medical coding, and yesterday got offered a position. (Woot Woot) This offer allows her to work from home after the first month, but on personal computers. She currently has a 10 year old HP laptop that I hate more than I can describe, so I offered to build her a new PC for the new job.

It really doesn't need to be powerful at all, as all she has to do is use the internet to complete forms, but she also occasionally plays minecraft and like Farm Simulator more than she's willing to admit. I haven't been paying super close attention to GPUs and CPUs lately so I could use a bit of advice in that regard. I have a NAS in the basement, so local storage is pretty much a non-issue. Since she's never going to use more than one GPU, and doesn't need extra HDD space, I was kinda leaning towards an mITX build to save desk space.

We don't really have a defined budget, but want to keep it as affordable as reasonably possible, while still accomplishing the task at hand.

Here's what I came up with:

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/c9RmcY
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/c9RmcY/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($184.89 @ OutletPC)

Video Card: Gigabyte - Radeon RX 570 4 GB Gaming 4G  Video Card  ($172.98 @ Amazon)
Case: NZXT - H200 (White) Mini ITX Tower Case  ($69.99 @ Newegg)

Has anyone used the WD Black NVMe drives? I usually use Samsung SSDs but these are quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks in advance!

@Real_PhillBert You could save $100 and go with a Ryzen 2200G. It would be great for internet and those specific games.(Unless you're a diehard intel fan like me but for starting, ryzens a good option.) I actually also play minecraft and FS17 with my dual core I3-7100 and a 1050ti at or above 60FPS 1080p.

I'm gonna go find my own tech support...

with BLACKJACK and HOOKERS!

I also recommend an LED 120mm fan of your choice if you so desire, they look super good under the front panel of that case.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Why not?

Serious answer though, I do think a 1.5TB or 2TB SSD would serve better.

A non NVMe SSD is the way to go, so the 970 Evo is basically burning money. Also, not sure if 2TB is needed.

Doesn't sound like much space is needed

You're scumming out for your GF?

I'm gonna find her and tell on you! Don't you know she's supposed to get a nicer system than you have? Shows you love her! Shame on you...

I'm certainly not married to intel, but I guess if I was going to go AMD I would probably go with the 2400G for a little more horsepower headroom but then you're just about at the price of the 8400 anyway..

Thanks for the responses.

As far as storage, I have a NAS in the basement, so local storage is really a bit of a waste past about 500gb.

I notice none of you included a CPU cooler or a GPU, is a GPU unnecessary for this?

The 2400G has integrated graphics (they perform pretty well, between a 1030 and a 1050). A CPU cooler is not neccessary, the CPU already comes with a pretty decent one

thats just stupid. first of all if she doesnt need more power then why waste money. second if shes anthing like the girls i dated she wont be able to appreciate better hardware anyway for a lack of knowledge about it. just get a pretty case in her favourite color.
