Which CPU to pair with GTX 2070

Hello,

I currently own a GTX 970 and an I5 6600 (non-k) and I'm getting very poor performance (sub 60 fps).

Im playing mostly PUBG and BF1 atm, but I would like to buy something that would last for about 5 years worth of AAA titles.

I have a 1440p 165hz monitor.

After a good amount of research i've come to buying the Gigabyte GTX 2070 OC 8GB and I'm pretty set on that.

I would like to average atleast 144 fps at said games.

On the CPU side, I'm conflicting between i5 8600, i7 8700 and i5 9600k.

Not planning to OC but the 9600 is similarly priced as the others.

Would need a MoBo asweel, so feel free to recommand that too.

Thanks alot.

I7 7700K? you wont need a new mobo.

if you want to pick from those id probably go for the 9600K, not especially updated on the mobos for Z390 so i wont recomend anything from there but anything Z370 should be fine

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Was looking for a 6 core CPU, do you think that 4 cores will be abale to handle upcomming AAA titles?

I think a quadcore is going to be just fine for quite a while further, even if hexacores and up are going to get more love. If you want to spend the money for a new mobo too then id go for 9th gen option

Wait for Zen 2 and get a better CPU and motherboard.. Will be great for games and probably have more cores than Intel (that's a given)..

If your motherboard is a z board, get a secondhand 7700k and oc it.

Not a HUGE difference between that and 9900k in games

I've got an asus b150m-a, and the 7700k isn't really cheap. Costs the same as an 8700.

Never thought of getting a Ryzen. Intel is superior in gaming as much as I know, is that wrong?

Intel is better if you have a powerful gpu and if you are pushing high fps (over 120) at non-gpu bound resolutions. Otherwise there's little difference at GPU bound scenarios.

I'm counting on 120+ fps at 1440p at 144/165hz.

The 2070 isn't going to do that most of the time, though (at least not without dropping to medium). So it won't really matter.
