How did you learn to type?

Lachrymal

By typing I mean touch type. Hardly laying an eye on the keyboard as I type is what I soon want to accomplish. Right now I type with 3 fingers and rarely look up in the process. Did you get the hang of it all while chatting with your friends, a program like Mavis Beacon, typing class at school, or did you train yourself in your own special way?

Over time , I suppose it started with Diablo 2 and Warcraft. Although I find myself occasionally looking at my keyboard to reposition my hand in HOTS not entirely sure why.

Instant messaging 13 people, writing a school paper, and doing some C++ in the background all at the same time helped...

But I really learned in school...typing classes.  I'm pretty sure if you google, there are free graphical typing classes online...

Check out Typingweb.com OR it's also a chrome extension as well I guess.  It asks you to log in, but you don't have to, you can close the login window and it will let you do the lessons(you just can't save progress).  The beginning lessons are trivial but do them anyway.

Before i started using my computer a ton, i texted a lot using the keyboard on my phone. It helped me get good at typing and knowing where the key's are on my PC's keyboard.

By typing.

This is the right answer^

I was home schooled during 7th grade, and my mom forced me to learn typing. She did this by having me type for at least an hour a day on a typewriter. I was following a basic course to teach me most of the keys. The only ones I pause on are the special characters on 1-0, such as $*%)@.

However, as I've continued typing, I get better and better at hitting the right keys when it comes to those. I usually just keep guessing if I have no clue until I find the character I need.

I type at like 55WPM when uncomfortable, but when I'm comfortable, I can hit upwards of 80-120WPM.

It's all about practice practice practice. The fact I frequented an anime forum that I spent upwards of 8 hours on (watching anime along with it) helped a lot too. I typed a tooon.

My cerebellum did it for me pretty much. I'm a pianist as well so I guess I'm already more attuned to this kind of task; I type quickly and without looking down because I type a lot I guess...

Video Games probably.

I started out chicken pecking, after maybe 3 years later I was getting 30wpm looking at the keyboard.

Then I started getting into PC gaming around 2009,still looking at my keyboard, and by 2012 i was at 60wpm. Now I'm around 90wpm not looking at the keyboard. Mechanical keyboard helped me a lot.

I don't use homerow either.

I taught myself when I got my first laptop, it just came over time. I did a lot of Instant Messaging, on Yahoo, AIM, and MSN as well as being an active member of a BMX forum. Once I hit highschool I had a class that I was required to take that taught me some stuff I didn't already know, but that was mostly proper technique and most of that went out the window once I passed the class. Gaming does help a lot as well.

It just happened over time, I started looking less and less at the keyboard and also increasing speed slowly. My advice is to just type a lot, if you have the time for it.
