Worth getting 7980XE? sanity check...

So at last I'm getting close to getting a 7980XE... but now I'm starting to become really, really afraid with shivers and all. There's no way to get it delidded without attempting it myself, which is absolutely insane... consider I've never even built a pc before. and how exactly is the cpu without it? if it's completely useless I shouldn't buy it, but before that the only thing I could think of worth getting would be those speculated 16-core 3850X Ryzen,, which nothing is known of, no benchmarks or anything just a rumor. It may be 2020 before the new workstation platforms are out ...right?

So what options are left then besides 7980XE... The 9980XE has been a failure for all i know and what's left is TR 2950X, 2990WX those are both outperformed by this intel

And getting a cpu + motherboard only to replace it with Ryzen? That was my plan for a while, until realizing how ridiculous it may be, especially if I would get the 9900K that with 8 cores and 64GB ram doesn't really serve as a good workstation... so if I'm planning to buy something and sell/replace it later, what options are there in that case?

Yes I'm in a rush, I'm stuck sitting with an old laptop and it feels like it won't last for that long either... on top of that I got several pc parts already including 2080Ti graphics card, 2 M.2 SSDs and the corsair 570X crystal case.. these items i bought last year will just be sitting here.

So I feel like I'm doing really stupid things ongoing. Maybe it's true that I want a delidded 7980XE but how am I expecting to get that done.. magic? I can buy the tools but I can't buy experience, skills and courage

I need wisdom

What specifically are you going to do with this PC?

Running VMs, learning things, programming, streaming, video content... Never mentioned, but think I also want to draw with tablet, completely forgot about that as I gave up since the laptop lags like hell on that as well. I need to learn everything about computers in order to become professional:)

I decided I want the many cores and ram to be able to multitask, instead of single core activities like gaming

the 2950X is half the price, and within 10-15% of the 7980xe, depending on the workload, and has more PCIe(64 vs 40), only thing threadripper loses out on is thunderbolt 3.

use the saved 1000$ to get a workstation class GPU instead of a "gamer"

aka Quadro P5000 instead of 1080 ti, RTX titan (blah blah blah, sometimes professional drivers help, and nothing wrong with slightly better gaming perf) instead of a 2080 ti

for VMs, 2990WX will destroy the 7980xe.

also, "programming" doesnt require 18c, or even 8. streaming would work fine on a 2950x, and video editing, the 9900k reigns supreme. This is what i would do. Get a 2950X content creation box, and a seperate 9900k "Gaming" rig, then use the 2950x to stream your 9900k.

Wow yes, so the idea of getting two machines wasn't as crazy after all, though by doing so right now I'd kindof be giving up on anticipating for Ryzen, unless replacing things once again... future goals

That sounds like an amazing setup really...thanks for all the info o.o

then wait a couple months for ryzen, or wait for black friday, ryzen 3 will be out then, or if you have a hunger for building a PC. get a 2950x now, and perhaps a 3700x or whatever later.
