You should be able to use your same product key you used from Windows 7 (might be a little difficult if its an oem key) if you want to keep 7. If you want 8 you will have to buy a license (unless you get it with 'other' ways which we will not talk about here). You can just install over your old partition with Windows 7 (it will erase all your data) if you want. You could also make a new partition on the drive and install it on that instead.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Are you trying to put 2 Windows installations on one drive?

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

If you have windows 8 already, it will not interfere with windows 7 on the disk. However, if you don't, windows 7 won't show up as a boot option (through experience).

Woo!

You can buy a windows 8 upgrade instead.

You need to create a new partition and install Win 8 onto that, it will give you the option to create a partition before you install the OS.

I'm not completely sure if you can run a windows 7 installation and a 7 to 8 upgrade on a different partition with the same key. You probably can, buy you might want to confirm with someone else or MS.

im trying to put win 8 over wind 7 on the one hard drive so im guessing I would just use my old windows 7 oem key and then somehow install my windows 8 over it?

Are we talking dual boot here?

To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

I'm still having a hard time trying to decipher what you're doing.

When you switch motherboards, you need to do a clean reinstall. Why would you install over windows 7? Are you installing from CD or USB?

I think his idea is that he doesnt want to lose the content he currently has and just upgrade to windows 8. much like us will macbooks get an upgrade that we can install right on top of our existing firmware without losing any content or settings. answer is no you cant. windows 8 plays a different ball game than 7.*

if this is not the answer, then carry on.

*I in my limited experience feel i should not give advice but i am. One must not travel without salt.

I want to install windows 8 and I currently have windows 7 so when it asks me to install a new os when I upgrade the mobo I was just going to buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416776 and use It I was wondering if that would work

You will lose all your programs. Back up any music, movies, and pictures you have. Ninite.com should help you do a bulk of your new installations.

When you get the CD, pop it in and shut the computer down. When you restart, press F12 or delete to enter into BIOS. You'll have to look around for something that says "boot order," "boot priority," or "boot device sequence," -- something along those lines. Set CD-ROM to first boot device. This part is crucial, if you have more than one hard drive, when you power your computer off unplug the power supply and physically unplug all other hard drives.

If you set the boot sequence right and have the disk in, you will boot to windows installer. It's important that you do a clean reinstall and not just an upgrade because you're switching motherboards and everything is going to be broken if you're not switching to the same/similar enough motherboard.

can I just use my old product key to get into windows for the first time after I upgrade my mobo, and then proceed to do what it says in the video to upgrade to win7 instead of doing what the person above said(OEM product key)

Yes but that is incredibly roundabout. Unless you do a fresh install, you won't even be able to boot into your windows 7. Just back up your data, then erase all the data on your hard drive and install a clean windows 8 on it. Upgrading isn't perfect and leaves files that you won't be able to delete clogging up space.

Do you have a second computer?

Drop in the motherboard making sure to leave all other extraneous drives unplugged, boot up and enter into BIOS, set boot device to CD rom, then put in the CD, save and exit to BIOS and the computer will restart and boot from the CD

why would I need a separate comtputer this is all so confusing and I feel it should should be easier...what would I do with the separate computer? and when you say  to put the motherboard in are you talking about in the other computer or the main one that im building with

I'm asking if you have a separate computer in case you get stuck and have no way to figure out what's wrong

It's really only a three step process, after you do it once you'll realize it's not difficult at all.

Um, I'm not sure what helping is trying to say. Perhaps he's asking if you have a second computer to download drivers with because before you install either the ethernet or wireless drivers for your computer, you won't be able to access the internet to download the drivers.

So I'm going to list this in steps to try to make it easier.

1. Install the motherboard into the computer you want to upgrade.

2. Insert windows CD or flash drive.

3. Go into BIOS and select your windows CD or flash drive as boot number 1

4. Restart and follow directions on the screen. When it asks for install location, I recommend going to advanced options and deleting your partition so you can have a completely fresh install. ( This will wipe your hard drive)

5. Install drivers and other programs.
