7980XE ( 2 cores hotter than the other ones)

My 7980XE and X299 motherboard arrived today. I was pretty happy until I started overclocking...

 

At stock the Cinebench score is about 3350 which is normal.

 

Then I went 4.5Ghz (stable at 1.17V), however....

 

2 cores shoot up to 105C and throttle the entire CPU.

 

With OC I get about 2700 Cinebench.

 

Single core at 4.5Ghz is 203 points which is pretty good.

 

Is there any way to fix this?

 

Even at stock the CPU core 12 and 2 are at 85C.

 

Pretty sure this is not a paste because I made sure it's spread across the entire CPU evenly.

Is this CPU delidded and are you using AIO or custom loop cooling? Just wondering also out of own interest since I've been trying hard to obtain it ~

It's not unusual to have a hot core or two, but that sounds like you may have a poor paste job by Intel or a silicon lottery dud

But what are the other cores at with full load? Run firestarter at a frequency where your below throttling and power limits and post coretemp screenshot or HWiNFO showing all core temps so we can see the difference.

What I learnt from delid guides... If the paste between the IHS and CPU die is not divided evenly and leaves gaps of low to no concentration inbetween them, you get temperature spikes on these spots involving one or several cores and that may indeed throttle or break the whole CPU,, so I think that means having to delid it (and reapply paste) which seems scary to me but there are guides online and der8auer / CaseKing sells these tools on their website

 

Delid-Die-Mate X is the one for Skylake X models, but can't see availability anywhere, just like the processor itself ><

 

Rockit 99 appears to be another one

 

This CPU seems awesome to me in case it is delid + overclocked to maximum 4.6GHz,, but deliding comes with risk of completely breaking it when it knocks off resistors / capacitors on the PCB and putting them back on requires microscopic work at which point they conclude the CPU is broken... I couldn't find guides on how to put them back on either. I should ask der8auer to make a guide for that in his comments XD

On this video towards the end he shows the broken CPU where resistors / capacitors are knocked off ,,Says he can fix but doesn't explain how:D

 

He did mention an USB microscope that I ended up searching for I don't know why...

Or sending it back and getting a replacement if the temperature difference is excessive. Don't think Intel would have a problem with that.

I sold it to someone else, I'd rather not be tempted by fate. I'll keep 9900K at 5.3Ghz.

Will put those funds towards Zen 2 16 core or something.

Wait so you sold it already?  

 

What it may have been is a convex IHS that would have required lapping to make better contact with the cold plate on the cooler.

It's just that at idle the system was eating 300W instead of 200W with 9900k, and single core is 30 points lower than my heavily overclocked 9900k. Also, this CPU had issues and it is 1.5 years old. I decided to just keep 9900k.

so what you say... 7980XE, not worth to even get it right? And def not second hand unless given the ability to test it and make sure all temps are good etc... I basically have to settle for a system that will serve as workstation, you think the 9900K will do just fine? besides its 8 cores 64GB ram seems limited to me

It goddamn is worth to get 9900k. People have issues sometimes where few cores will be hotter than others and that limits overclocking when it comes to 7980XE. To fix, you need to delid. This will void your warranty. Not worth it IMO.

 

OC 9900k to 5.3Ghz and you'll get 231 points single core in Cinebench and 2300 in multi. I'd say good enough, considering the price difference.

 

I'll get a laptop instead.

Thanks lol... that's some good common sense right there. Realistically spoken there's no way in hell I'd be spending 1500-2k on a processor that I'm gonna delid right away with zero experience, let alone not ever having built a pc before, but somehow manage to get it all right in one go (because that's all I'd have). For some reason I keep clinging to this badass plan that will somehow succeed

 

Enough with this laptop for me.. it's gonna blow up any time soon if I keep up the wait XD

This is 5.2Ghz 9900k btw. All chips should achieve this.

Those are amazing results. You have great cooling systems though according to your specs.. both 360 + 240mm custom loops, they should make a lot of difference compared to 360mm AIO

360mm for 1st 2080 Ti.
