iphone xr or s8

Shyam Ganapathy

I already have the galaxy s8, but it's battery life isn't great anymore, and the phone has slowed down a good bit. I think I am going to upgrade soon, so I am looking for a decent phone. I am thinking of the XR or maybe if Apple releases a new budget model this year, that. I think an iPhone might be good since I am a Hackintosh user, so I can interact between my phone and the computer pretty well, since I have facetime and iMessage working, and I am also thinking of picking up a MacBook if I do decide to switch to an iPhone. What are yall's thoughts?

mabye try a battery replacement first?

I have already done one, and this is a recurring issue. The problem is that even with a fresh battery, the battery life isn't that great. Either way, my upgrade cycle is coming up, so I have already decided that I am upgrading, just don't know to what phone.

I would probably just pick up an iPhone 8 Plus.  The X series doesn't really have anything of significance over the 8.  Apple still sells the 8 too (and the 7, strangely)

And yeah iPhone shits on Galaxy battery life.  I jumped from S7 Edge to 6S Plus and it was like "wow this is how a phone *should* be".

I can't really go back to big bezels after the s8. But, my carrier does sell the iphone x for 750 (350 with trade in) which is the same price as the xr. What do you think about that?

The X is a better phone than the XR which is why it's $999 vs $750.

Yes I'm saying MSRP the X is more than the XR.  If both are the same price to you, get the X and it'll probably help on resale value later too.

I hate whenever I watch YT videos and someone is using stereo audio recording.  I don't want to hear a bunch of noise in one ear and nothing in the other and usually end up saying "just f-ing sync the audio channels to be the same thing".  That's just me though :)

I didn't know the XR was better, but I'd personally prefer the OLED panel.  I've seen the XS Max the thing is f-ing gorgeous.

Check one out for yourself. Lot of misinformation saying that the display looks bad because its 326ppi. I spent about 2 hours with a XR and I thought the screen looked fantastic. Extremely bright and the most color accurate LCD out there.

I'm still on a 7 Plus and have to admit Apple has nailed down LCD tech for phones.  If I could get the XS Max with an LCD screen, I probably would from a utilitarian perspective (I hate how OLED does burn-in eventually), but from a pure aesthetic you can't beat infinite contrast.

That’s an opinion. Same with the OLED vs LCD display. I’d personally prefer the lense and OLED, and I’d be willing to sacrifice a bit of battery for it. As well as for the smaller bezels. But that’s all subjective

It really comes down to what you want. Apple has an ecosystem that, whether you like the company or not, works really well when you package it all together. You'll be used to the user experience if you get another Android phone though, there's something to be said for that. They also tend to be cheaper.

Yeah exactly. I'm not even shelling out too much here, so that's why I kinda like it. Just 350 for the phone and hackintoshing is technically free.

^^^ I have the X, from everything I've seen the XR is better. If you already had an X I don't think it's worth the upgrade, but if they're both the same price the XR is faster and has a better camera and battery life, larger screen, and the only real loss is an IPS vs OLED display and 3Dtouch, both of which aren't biggies.

No it's not... slower, worse camera processing and such, smaller screen and battery. Higher MSRP =/= better phone. It's a flagship phone, thus why the MSRP is higher, and it has a bit fancier build and screen. But it's not a better phone than the XR, it's the 1st gen of its form factor and tech, the XS and XR improve on it. Not enough to warrant an upgrade like I said earlier, but if you're buying new just get the latest one since there's no price difference.

Also a performance boost, and update support for longer. But I have a feeling that by the time you get to phones with the a10 or a11, there's no reason to make any part of the OS more demanding and therefore need a new phone. Anyways, XR is a nice phone.

Also a performance boost, and update support for longer. But I have a feeling that by the time you get to phones with the a10 or a11, there's no reason to make any part of the OS more demanding and therefore need a new phone. Anyways, XR is a nice phone.

True. I guess I could go for the xr. The only thing i'm worried about is this bad habit I have, where I use watch netflix in shower. this isn't a problem on my s8 because of it's ip68 water resistance, but how will ip67 go for that stuff? I'm not submerging it, just water does splash all over it.
