Help choosing what to upgrade.

Hi all!

I currently have a somewhat decent computer with:

msi b350 tomahawk motherboard

ryzen 3 1200 cpu

gtx 660 ti gpu

660 watt psu

5400 rpm hdd

 

I've been looking to upgrade to a much better pc but i'm having trouble deciding what to upgrade first.

Either get a ryzen 2600 or get a 1070/vega 56 and get better performancce right away but have to deal with throttling and get the cpu later. Or i could ust get and ssd as waiting for my hardrive to spin up is a huge pain.

 

So what do you think  i shoudl upgade?

SSD should be your priority. After I would see where your priority sits between cpu and gpu.

What throttling? Neither power nor thermals should be an issue here.

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

cpu throttling, i have a ryzen 3 1200, anything above a 1060 will throttle

Oh you mean bottleneck. Yeah a quad core ain't much but it's worth putting up with to get a good Graphics card and then a good CPU later.

Also, bottlenecks aren't absolute, there could be some cases where a quad core is enough and the graphics card can get fully used.

true, though i did get mine to overclock to 3.4 ghz

On all cores?  The 1200 is 3.4 boost clock out of the box, that's not an overclock.

 

Get an SSD, then a GPU, then a new CPU.   How much RAM?

sorry i meant 3.5 ghz and i believe so, out of the box mine would oly boost to 3.25 and only for a few minutes

as a side question how much of a performancec change do you get from going from single t dual channel on ryzen? I heard that single channel cuts you mem bandwith in half?

i just checked and you are right, the ryzen 3 1200 should turbo to 3.4 ghz, but mine doesn't and it's not throttling

stock cooler, fractal design focus g case, no extra fans just 2 120 mm that came with the case though i think i have a 80mm fan lying around somewhere

IMO, a good setup for you is this:

 

Ryzen 5 2600

2x8 GB RAM

256GB SSD (boot + programs)

Your old HDD or another SSD for speed loading games

RX580 or 1060 6GB

 

With your funds, you can get the SSD, CPU and GPU if you work on $400.
