Need Some Help With FreeNAS

I'm stuck. I have installed and gotten everything where I need it. So now to connect to windows, but it won't. I have SMB sharing enabled but Windows "cannot find the drive" Does anyone know how to fix this?

What have you entered in options menue when connecting to the share?

you should enter:

\\your.Freenas.ip.adress\sharename

When you enabled SMB sharing, did it turn green?

 

under file explorer try entering \\IP ADDRESS\  and see if the share folder pops up.

SMB sharing is on, Iv'e tried entering the IP but windows cannot find it

Entered the IP with windows explorer or entered the IP trying to map the drive? I assume you can access FreeNAS's web interface from your PC since you setup the SMB share...so that means your PC can access FreeNAS. It seems more like either permission issue or issue with the SMB service.

 

Under the web interface on the services tab, click the wrench icon next to SMB. Under "Bind IP Addresses:" is the FreeNAS's IP checked or is it one of the others?

I have bound the IP but windows still can't find it

Are you using file explorer? What error are you getting?

Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.126 (tried multiple things for the sharename and without it)

Error code 0x80070035

Are you in workgroup or in a Domain?

 

You can try restarting the workstation service to see if Windows will then connect. Open command prompt as administrator then type the following commands...

• NET stop "workstation"

• NET start "workstation"

If that does not work,

• you can go back into command prompt and type "NET USE" then enter to see if anything shows up.
• If the list is empty try typing "NET USE \\192.168.1.126" then enter.
• If it is successful, that means Windows can connect to your server.

If it hangs there, hold the CTRL key and press the letter "C".

• After that type "ncpa.cpl" and press enter.
• Your network connections window should pop up.
• Now right click on your network connection and select "properties"
• select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click the "properties" button
• Click the "Advanced" button
• Click the "WINS" tab
• Make sure under "NetBIOS Setting" you either have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" or "Default:" selected. If not select one of those options and click the "OK" buttons to confirm your entry and try again.

I stopped and started workstation got nothing, then tried net use and nothing showed up, it hung on the net use w/ ip

NetBIOS setting was on default I went ahead and enabled it. And still didn't work

 

Also, I've heard some stuff saying that FreeNAS doesn't work with AMD is that true?

Do you have another PC you can try accessing the share on? I've had issues before where something would change in Windows and all sort of wacky things would prevent me from accessing my SMB shares...

 

There are a few things you can check on your FreeNAS web interface.

• Under the "sharing" tab, click "WIndows (SMB)"
• Click on the share path, then click on the "Edit" button at the bottom
• Click on "Advanced Mode" button
• Make sure "Browsable to Network Clients:" is checked

If it is checked you could try enabling guess access temporarily to see if that resolves the connectivity problem. If it does then you may have a permission issue in FreeNAS.

Tried that, once before and retried now, I went to two different computers both couldn't access it either

No apologies are necessary. There are just so many things that could be causing your issue that trying to think of everything to ask and suggest isn't really possible. So we've established that you can access your FreeNAS web interface right? So we know that your FreeNAS box is communicating on your network. Just need to figure out why your PC can't access the share.

 

What is your FreeNAS setup?

Is it a bare metal install or are you using FreeNAS in a VM?

How is your FreeNAS box connected? Is it by an standard off the shelf router or something different?

Is FreeNAS configured DHCP or did you put a static IP address?

Is your firewall blocking port 139 or 445 on the router or in Windows?

Are you on FreeNAS 11?

 

If you can physically move your machine close enough to your PC, you could try a direct connection to rule out a router issue. Give your PC and FreeNAS box a static IP and just connect them together with a single CAT 5 or 6 cable. See if you can access the share that way.

cant get any computer close enough to the server to do that, instead of hanging when I type NET USE 192.168.1.126 it gives system error 67. Any idea to what that is and how to fix?

Error 67 just means that it isn't able to see the "name" in this case the IP. Which means either something is blocking the connection due to firewall or permission issue, or maybe there is a misconfiguration. Did you follow that YouTube tutorial with another share step by step? You don't have to configure the users if you aren't trying to secure your network folder.

I did follow it step by step, I'm gonna check the firewall to see if anything is messed up

Under the SMB Share settings (not the SMB service) did you make sure to tick the box that says "Allow Guest Connections"? If you didn't it's going to reject requests to connect on your local network.

 

This will get you into the server but it won't get you into the share.

I HAVE FIXED IT, thanks for all the help

I did fresh install on both FreeNAS and Windows. Went through the video. Works like a charm
