GPU for i5 2500k

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

A 270, 270x, or 7870 would be good--whichever is cheapest.

A 212 Evo should be plenty for a ~4.5 ghz oc.

The cpu wouldn't even bottleneck a 780 Ti.

Hi,

..I'm looking in to a gpu for i5 2500k withouth bottleneck.. there are low pc programs use such as, xcel office bla bla and mostly movies + mmorpg's games going on. I saw there like gtx 650ti, GTX660, HD 7770, 7790, 7850, 7870, R7 260x and so on + GTX 760 and a R9 270X.. Which one would do?! I don't mind being AMD or nVIDIA, just to do my job.  Thanks!

PS: .. Interested in to a "cheap" cpu cooler for i5 2500k that can handle 4.0 or 4.2 .. even 4.5 maybe?

i'd go for GTX 760 from the cards that you mentioned.

But if you can go for 780Ti that would be the best choice. You'll have to OC your CPU to for optimum performance!

a 2500k OCed to 4.0 ghz+ wont bottleneck even a 780 TI maybe not even a dual one.

The Hyper 212 can push a 2500K up to 5ghz, I have the Hyper 212+ (Revision 1) So the newer one should be a little better too...

My 2600k with HT off, does 5ghz, but the temps were pretty close to the limit, 82*c average over the cores.. too close to 85*c

But 4.8ghz tops out at 76*c, as each CPU is different with silicon lottery yours may be better or worse..

*I'm also in South Australia, pretty high ambient temps in my room on a daily basis...

Only way to find out is get a 212 or better, and then find the Maximum, fine tune the volts and your good to go.

*Currently running @ 4.2ghz, and my max temps are 65-71c (Depending what I'm doing and if its 100% loaded or averaging 80-100%)

Remember though, my ambient room temp is always above 25*c, and you don't notice much difference between 4.2ghz and 4.8ghz, unless benching and crunching numbers..

With video editing you "may notice" it going faster, but you'd have to do a back to back 4.2 vs 4.8 to really tell...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

What about a good motherboard for this cpu? Not extreme, just a mid one, that runs 8gb ddr3 1600 as well..

What about a good motherboard for this cpu? Not extreme, just a mid one, that runs 8gb ddr3 1600 as well..

Thats a bit of a quandry..

I currently have the older z68 in a box I used to use, it would only let me clock up to 4.6ghz and wouldnt let me use my 2133mhz speeds, but 1600mhz.

My current motherboard lets me hit 4.9 with HT on, 5.2 without it, 2133mhz is running,... some motherboards do weird things when pushed with overclocking and extra volts...

Cheaper boards may skimp on power regulation or phases, maybe the CPU memory controller doesnt work as well, your OC may not hold up as well...

Best bet is to look up your store, find a model you think would suit, google the model with "review" after it, and see how the reviewer had a go at overclocking and if its a decent board for it..

Or post in here what your store has to offer,... because we could ramble 20 motherboards to suit your CPU and you might not be able to get them...

Also, "Most" Newer z77 Mobo's support SB CPU's, some may require a bios update however.

I'll let you think this over and I'll check back in a while. (If you quote someone, they get notified)

Just about any decent z77 mobo should do.

OC3D, is an enthusiast site like this, but doesnt just have a forum, the normal website is chock FULL of z68-z77 motherboard reviews.

If you use their search or go through their MOBO section, you could probably find what your looking for...

There are many other sites, which is why I said to google, but I like TinyTomLogans views on things and doesnt always hold back his tongue if something annoys him, which I find great, not sugar coating bad reviews.

I did 4.2 GHz on the stock cooler back in the day but a hyper 212 is great, I would recommend the GTX 760 however if you don't want to max out games at 1080p it might be a bit overkill seeing as you play mostly MMOrpg's like I do. My 660 Ti is overkill for what I do (however I love it).

As for which motherboard, for overclocking stability I wouldn't go lower than an 8 phase motherboard when it comes to sandy bridge because if an electrical surge happens an 8+ phase mobo could save your CPU's life. Depending on where you live I'd recommend getting the Biostar TZ77 XE4 because it can overclock on lower voltages than most motherboards . (it doesn't make much of a difference for 4.5 however the higher you can go the more performance you yield) and biostar is usually cheaper

pretty sure it will

then there is no i5 CPU currently able not to bottleneck 780 SLI's... Sandy is still going hard vs ivy and haswell.

So since the i7 2600k is an i5 with HT, it would do the same right..?

@Cryptonite

do the same as in compete? I'd say yes, but not too sure since I never owned a 2600k before and reviews and benchmarks about it back then claimed that the i5 2500k performed about 5% better in games however it could be that they just had parked cores or something.

I meant bottleneck two 780's like the 2500k, I'm guessing probably.

I had unparked my cores before BF4 made it cool :), I'm a performance nut.

I don't think people will be able to feel the bottleneck though, even with an i5.

With so much power and FPS, your no doubt right, even if MIN/AVG/MAX were down a little, it would still be above ample needed.

As I'm considering going 290x instead of a 2nd 7950, of course eventually I'd go 2x 290x's, was curious if it would be a bad idea.

That's correct. @Cacao proved that his 3830k bottlenecked his SLI Titans at stock clocks.

Do you think thats DX11's being bloated thats causing it..?

The mantle idea of removing the bottlenecks from CPU's (regardless of the other features)

Hopefully when its out, and Nvidia and AMD both start using it (if ever) that it negates all these high end CPU's still bottlenecking Beast GPU's.
