3rd gen 3920XM desktop project

Crimsoncursed

I've been working on this build for awhile now.  Off and on here and there.

I was able to get this little 4 core 8 thread mobile processor to 4.29ghz as of a few days ago.

Beats the i7 7700 I had in every benchmark

This build did so well it made me hate my 7th gen i7 and upgraded to 9th gen on my main rig

"Sold my pc and made a new one. Because my 2017 build was getting destroyed by a 2012 build.... sad"

I was running a 1080 in it for awhile,  but I recently got a 2080, so I might be doing another video on that with the overclock CPU

As of now I'm putting a i3 IHS I had laying around on it so the surface of the cpu is level when putting on a custom bracket heatsink.

20180929_210908.thumb.jpg.c687071afaf41be46f2938d2eea384dc.jpg

Second custom bracket heatsink.  Had to trim down the chipset heatsink

20181225_195322.thumb.jpg.c5ba6604ca012dbc63426b0c06ee7670.jpg20181225_195327.thumb.jpg.b769a526bee3feccdd858d0cb68489f5.jpg20181225_202512.thumb.jpg.0d147abda5ac640d3659fa7c3256b74f.jpg

This was when I was able to get the stable overclock at a reasonable temp.

75 degrees at 4.29ghz on all 4 cores

I will probably get some hate for this one.

Painted the board,  and yes I left the VRM mosfets, caps, and chokes unpainted

20190110_204837.thumb.jpg.b021ef647482dbbf70d2860834c637b8.jpg

Added the heatsinks and IO sheild.  Still need to cut the heatsinks to the correct size.  But it's coming along

20190111_171545.thumb.jpg.3d66206f298ba29b029a4bc9f75299ae.jpg

Put the computer together to make sure it works.  Was all good.  Boots just fine.

I proceeded to check thermals to see if the IHS was working or not.  Let's just say it was a no go.

So now I need to cut the heatsinks some more,  since the IHS was giving me that extra lift needed to run the mosfet heatsinks.

20190113_184448.thumb.jpg.714c955334a40c3ae7d078a752c4f7ba.jpg20190113_184454.thumb.jpg.87994d73bd4e667b5601cd92f724d78d.jpg

Booted to windows at 80 degrees,  waaay too hot.  So as of now the mosfet heatsinks are off.  But I just recently had a AIO die on one of the main builds I have.  So now I'm running this heatsink on that.

(Thermaltake floe 240)  sucks....

Currently as it stands

Case: metallic gear neo micro

(Dissapointed with this case)

Might do a video update on it soon.

Video's I made of the build

I7 3632qm

Underclocked i7 3920xm

When ever I add the 4.29ghz overclock and RTX 2080 video it will be here

Haha yeah.  Once I found out there was an extreme CPU for it I had to get it and push this thing to its limits.

Once I get the heatsink in order I might try for higher voltages and get a higher overclock.

The system locks up at around 4.4ghz on all 4 cores without voltage change.  So I backed off to 4.29ghz and all seems well

I painted the board,  I really disliked the green.

I matted it out with non conductive clear couat.  Made sure to carefully cover anything that shouldnt be painted,  then hand painted all of the gold

Finished paint job is in the main post,  next is some asrock heatsinks, and a IO shroud

Thanks,   been working on this for some time.

Wanted to make a video of the paint and heatsinks etc.  But I got impatient and ended up just putting it together as soon as I can

Here it is as it sits now.

I decided to go with the MetallicGear Neo micro.

Man was that a bad idea.  This case was a nightmare to work in.  Cable managment is weak.  The 3.5inch HDD has to be on the wall of the case.  Man I am just over all dissapointed with this case.

Sounds like a nightmare. On the plus side the case looks great, That hard-drive on the wall of the case is a bit of a let down. Maybe you can get someone to 3D print some sort of cover or something for the HDD. I'm also curious about the GPU, does it get enough airflow at the bottom of the case? Such an odd case, but like I said, it still looks good and as we all know, its all about the flashyness.

I'm probably gonna cut out a peice of acrylic and paint it for the HDD.  Or outright ditch the hdd and go 1tb ssd msata or data.  But rather not spend more money if I dont have too

The GPU I have not installed the drivers yet or tested it.

But as for airflow.  It should be real good.  It has ventalation right below it with 2 x 120mm fan slots.  So it should be picking up cool air from the bottom.

As for overclocks.  I'm getting around 55 degrees celsius on 4.0ghz

I am really looking forward to carbonout from thermal grizzley.  It is very hard to level the thermal paste on direct die applications.  So I'm hoping the carbonout will help me with this.

For the power button issue I created a latching relay out of a momentary relay.  so I could power on and off the PSU with the power button.

(This pc doesnt have 24pin on the mobo,  only 4pin atx powers the whole board)

The piece of acrylic would do just as well, didn't think of that. I have a friend who owns a 3D printer, so my first reaction to everything is "Just 3D print the thing!"

Give that GPU a test, I'm interested to see the results. I'm sure the others on the thread are interested as well.

I thought there might have been some ventilation under the GPU, glad to hear it.

Good job on the OC, overclocking is always stressful for me.

The carbonout should help a lot, hope it works out.

As for your power solution, what and excellent work around, thinking outside the box there, well played.

Good Luck with the rest of the build

Thanks.  The case came with a cover that snaps into place where the HDD is.

Maybe I can double sided tape it to the HDD.

Maybe then I'll like the case.

As for cable managment,  I need to get cable extensions for pcie 2x8 so I can take that cable out of the inside of the case20190121_181827.thumb.jpg.53bc9836832d7b3dbc2dab89fdab22e6.jpg

And yes,  that's where metallic gear says is the only place to put the 3.5 inch HDD

I bought the case because it can have a 3.5inch hdd,  but didnt think it be like that.....

Slowed down the fan in the cpu to quiet things down.  Pushes the 4.0ghz clock to 66 degrees celsius.

Whole 10 degrees,  but much better than hearing a jet engine.

Also I know most people HATE stickers.  But I had to label my system.  This is the fist EXTREME processor i could ever afford.  I must have that case badge on it

20190122_183133.jpg

Waiting for my intel wireless card to come in,  the current wireless is so sloooow.

Once that comes in i can start downloading updates.  And no its difficult to get the PC to the wired spot at my house.  So wired usually isnt an option.

I tried bridging from my main rig to the secondary rig since they are right next to each other.  But I only got .9mbps on the bridge since I was downloading stuff on steam on my main rig

Done with the rig for now.

Once I get the thermal grizzly to come in I'll do some testing and overclocks.
