Disabled Sppsvc.exe - my water mark went away?

Is this allowed to be discussed on this forum?  If not I apologize and please delete thread Mods!

 

So I was tired of seeing this service Microsoft uses take up any of my CPU and finally pulled the trigger to regedit it out.  I don't use Outlook, Word, or any of those applications on my system so I wasn't worried about that, as I only game on this rig.  The thing that SHOULD have happened was made the Water Mark appear about having a non-licensed Windows 10 - however I have yet to "license" my OS - and the Water Mark...went away.  Rebooted a bunch, pulled GPU's to try to get it to trigger the water mark back on as I was curious why it made my non-licensed windows now appear as Licensed. 

 

Is there something Im missing?  Why would the water mark go away?  That makes zero sense to everything I have read about prior to disabling this service.

I think it's allowed, I don't see why it wouldn't be.

 

Does it just get rid of the watermark, or does it get rid of other stuff that is disabled with non-activated Windows?

Im not sure the implications.  Everything I read prior to doing this was that it would disable Microsoft Applications like Outlook, Word, (anything that requires a License check from Microsoft when you open it) because it couldn't communicate that license when it would try to.  That and it would "un-authenticate" your Windows until you changed the Service back to "2" instead of "4"

 

I will have to try changing Windows settings to check like you mention, great idea.  There are certain things like Background etc that you cant manipulate when the water mark is present.

It will fail all checks for licenses on MS products - Office, VS Studio, etc. Incl. Windows.

It isn't showing the watermark because it doesn't even know what a license is.

Odd that if you license windows it will unlicensed it (see all forum posts about disabling this service) but if I don't have a licensed Windows...it will just get rid of the watermark.

 

I think the real test as mentioned by @kelvinhall05 is to see if the services usually disabled by not licensing it, are accessible now.  I will have to check that when I get home.

There are tons of tutorials showing how to hide the activation watermark, some of those show that stopping this service will do that, but it's kind of like using a chainsaw to remove a zip-tie from a 80mm fan wire ... it's overkill. But if it's a side effect for a problem you had, I say it's for the better!

Yeah, weird it doesn't just use the state before the process is disabled.

Haha I didn't know this, the goal wasn't to hide it but it was a great byproduct of keeping MS from eating up MY cpu and using MY electricity.

 

Im happy, just hoping it stays gone at this point.  Will try to change components around tonight to see if I can force it just for learning sake - then I will try it on my Ryzen rig and my HTPC and see if I get the same results - my laptops are licensed lol

Yeah it was immediate.  Changed Start from "2" to "4" and Watermark just disappeared - first thing I noticed lol
