[SOS] Just Updated the motherboard for the first time, now I been waiting for 15min.

Go to solution Solved by asand1,

Flashing a bios always stands a chance of bricking your hardware. Therefore flashing should only be done when the update contains a fix for an issue you have. If not, don't.

My motherboard is an ASUS ROG STRIX B450-I. Ive never updated bios on a motherboard before so I'm kind of nerve wracked right now. I just downloaded a bunch of driver's and utilities in my while in my OS. The last thing I updated was the bios using a desktop application which may have been EZ Flash or EZ boot or something. It downloaded a couple updates for bios and BT driver's and said it was done updating but needed restarting. I'm scared if bricking this 200$ board just after 4 weeks of using it so please help me understand what to do right now. My monitor isn't getting any signals but the desktop is running and everything. Is it safe to restart?

Well the first lesson is to not update your BIOS unless you actually need to for compatibility reasons.

My memory was running lower than it should've at like 2133 instead of 2600 or something so I wanted to see if the bios update could solve it. Didn't think there would be any hiccups. So this wasn't a willy nilly decision as you might think.

To fix that you enable XMP, if that doesn't work you manually set the timings and voltage and frequency.

It's fine I restarted manually and it booted fine. Memory isn't working as I expected but I'll do what you said about manually setting. Thanks anyway15461985318402577770821662249084.thumb.jpg.aa7819aa7a77f4a16b02b7b587a8c148.jpg

@Enderman I gotta disagree on not updating BIOS.  If you don't want to update right away that's one thing, but on AMD systems you should always expect to update your BIOS eventually as they tend to bring about stability and performance increases.

@Casual Cube Set DOCP should get your RAM to run at its marketed speed.  What kit of RAM do you have?

I thought so that a BIOS update shouldnt be something to avoid unless necessary. It seemed like a fundamental thing to future proof and optimize your PC right?

I checked my ram and saw that they are advertized as 2400Mhz CL15 (GSkill Ripjaws 4 8x2). Since I was getting stutters in my games at 1080p ultra, I thought my rams curious underperformance mightve been the cause. I used bios to set it to 2666 right now and this is the screenshot from my CPU-Z. image.png.30e8b6167f60ef519515dd4e84964949.png

Now I'm wondering why it says CL 16 instead of 15. Is this how RAM ships out or did I get bamboozled?

Thanks for taking an Interest by the way!

The BIOS will change odd CL values to the closet even value if you have Geardown Mode enabled.  If you disabled Geardown Mode then that won't happen, but it also may not be stable.

Its a bit too much for me honestly, I dont know what BLCK or what samsung part is in my memory so I think I have to pass it up for now. Anyway the PC has been running stable since I last posted and its been running smoothly at 2666Mhz. Perhaps this is enough because I also stopped noticing any issues with my applications and games as well. Thank you very much!
