I have no idea what the f*** happened

So, long story short, my friend is on a trip with his school out of the country. He brought his laptop with him, and he messaged me saying that his laptop wouldn't turn on. Since he is on a different timezone (like 6 hour difference I think), communication is difficult; but I told him to open his laptop and take the battery out and try to boot with just the AC power cord (over adapter for the country he's in). I went to bed after that because it was very late here. I got up this morning and saw that he had messaged me again, wondering if his power supply had exploded. Attached was this image:

He then later messaged me saying that he thinks the WLAN module "exploded." Based on this image alone, it seems that damage is isolated to the motherboard (that top RAM stick could be borked, but further testing would be needed for confirmation). He did say his drives (NVMe SSD and HDD, I installed the SSD for him) are fine. 

 

I'm not 100% sure what laptop model he has, I know its an HP Pavilion something and it has an i5-7300HQ with a 1050. 

I'm thinking he needs to replace either the motherboard or the whole freakin' laptop. With warranty, motherboard replacement is probably the obvious answer. But, he is a college student (and he gets back from his trip only a few days before his spring classes start) so he's going to need a timely solution. I'm wondering if it'd be possible to DIY this, or at least know what happened.

I don't think it was the WLAN card, and to be honest that looks more like corrosion, but it looks more like the big yellow splodge in the top left

I can't help if you don't quote me. How am I supposed to know if you need my premium support? Now starting at £399.99 a year.

Also, be a sport and mark the correct answer as the correct answer. It will help pour souls in the future when they are stuck and need guidance.

Something spilled on there, stuff is corroded and nasty

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

That would show all over the board, not just one side
