How powerful of a GPU can I use with my i7 4770k without it being a major bottleneck and play games at 1440p well?

I'm planning a bit of a computer upgrade including a new 1440p montior, a new GPU and delidding and overclocking my i7 4770k. My i7 currently gets too hot to actually overclock it much but I'm assuming i'll get somewhere between 4,3 and 4,6 out of it once I delid it and so I'm basing my GPU choice on that. So after I've established that now on to the actual question, what kind of a GPU would be good pairing for that CPU and be powerful enough to play games well at 1440p 60 fps. I've been out of the tech loop for a good bit so I'm not sure but what would you guys say about a 1060 or a 580? Is a 1070 pushing it a bit too much? (I'm actually not aware as to what AMD's current equivalent to the 1070 is lol)

I don't really give a damn about running at max settings or stuff like that I just want a good gamining experience, rest of the specs that may matter are 16GB of DDR3 ram, an RM750 PSU and a Maximus VI Formula. Also I do realize that not all games will utilize the GPU and the CPU to the same extend as others just looking for a good rule of thumb. :P

Cheers and thanks in advance,

I'm rocking a 1070 with a non OCed 4770k (mine doesnt clock up well) @ 1440p and a 144hz display.  For what I play i could have easily stepped up the GPU for more performance, in the games I play i end up being GPU bound not CPU bound.

I have a friend with a 3770k and a 1070 Ti playing @ 1080p 144hz.

AMD's equivalent to the 1070 is the Vega 56.

A 4770k has roughly the same performance as a i7-6700 (non overclocked). (According to benchmarks) Since you're running at 1440, I think it'll be more GPU stressful rather than CPU, so you could go all the way up to a 1080 if you wanted to. Honestly, buy the 1070 and be happy.

1440p 60fps? Depending on the game, you'll want anything from GTX 1070, 1070ti, AMD Vega 56, GTX 1080, Vega 64, RTX 2070, to a 1080ti or RTX 2080. Don't worry about the CPU, hitting 60fps on that in demanding games shouldnt be difficult.

Eh, that website doesn't even consider resolution. Can't be too accurate. Higher resolution = easier on CPU harder on GPU.

That website is garbage. It tells you nothing about how it calculates a bottleneck, and it barely takes anything into consideration. It says a Threadripper 2990WX is bottlenecked by a 2080 Ti, when in reality it's the exact opposite.

OP, you can run pretty much whatever GPU you want. If you were at 1080p and wanted 200fps+, it might be a different story, but at 1440p 144Hz, your 4770K will be great. You could run a 1080 Ti if you wanted to. Shit, I have a 1080 Ti hooked up to my 3570K. Obviously it bottlenecks but at least I get maximum performance from my 3570K lol.

Alright looks like there might be a bit more life in my trusty 4770k than I expected after all. Sounds like the 1070 is gonna be a solid choice but I've just found some really good deals on 1060 6GB and on RX 580's 8GB (like half the price of a 1070 here in Germany) would be good enough to get 60 fps 1440p on high ish settings?

high-ish? Nah you need 1070 to do that in today's games, not to mention games in the future.

Probably not. My 1060 6 GB has trouble maintaining 60 fps at 1080p on some (albeit shittily optimized) games. Aka fallout 4 in cities, skyrim with a shit ton of mods installed. I'd go with the 1070 if you want 1440p. That said, if you only play well optimized games (DOOM), you'd probably be ok with a 1060 (I'd get tons of FPS on that game.)

Or look for a 980TI, it'll be roughly the same performance.

Depends on the game really.

Wouldn’t do more that a 1070 myself.

Given how mine performs and a cpu a step above it performs.

i7 4770k is a great CPU still.  Yes, you will an increase from say an I7-8700k. But only in the 10-15% range which tbh is poor for the price to performance. I would get the most expensive GPU you can afford and forget the rest.

I could be wrong but i thought when you crank the resolution higher the cpu starts to make less of a difference.

I have a 1080 with my 4670k.  I would just buy the best card you can afford, don't worry yourself with going overkill if the card is within your budget.

at 1440p, u could use a 2080ti and be fine.

This thread is a year old, but still relevant. I have an i7-4770k at 4.5mhz that runs basically the same on my old 750ti and 2070 Super for csgo at 120hz 3440x1440 monitor.  I have tested the same cards with an i7-8700k and get similar results.  As everyone knows by now, with high GPU requirements, the CPU is not so important.  I won't be upgrading CPU until the Ryzen 4000 series!

That's a really slow CPU man. Why would you underclock it that hard???? (I'm taking the piss because it's Ghz ?

You're right Mick Naughty. I should have been more descriptive. Old thread now, but what I meant is that since I am running 120Mhz on 3440x1440 .. I end up GPU bound, so I experience similar FPS regardless of CPU on most titles, esp the older ones I play.  If I were 1080p it would be another discussion.  That said, I am going to try an R5 3600 with a MSI Tomahawk max soon, just bc I have an itch to build and it won't break the bank.
