How much vram is used during video editing?

I am very new with things like video editing and know almost nothing. But i have heard that having a dedicated graphics card can boost the rendering time a lot.

so i want to know, how much video ram used during video editing, so that i can choose right gpu for my system.

please tell me.

not sure how much it actually uses (depends on the resolution of footage, bitrate, audio settings etc), but 1050ti seems to be the go-to card for 1080p.

My friend uses my pc for video editing. His camera records video in 4k. my pc has a i5 8400 processor.

which gpu will be better for video editing only? 1060 3gb fits in my budget. should i buy this? or i will have to manage to buy the 6gb version?

Here is a chart with a basic guideline for the amount of video ram you have on your video card.

SD Footage – 1 GB is fine
HD Footage – 1 GB is min. – while 2 GB is better
2K Footage – 3 GB is min. – while 4 GB is better
4K Footage – 4 GB is min. – while more than 4GB is better
5K Footage – 6 GB or more is better

i have a 1050ti 4gb and have no problems with 4k footage.

Depens what video editing software and how you edit.

 

For example, if you only do cuts and colour correction an$ fade in and out, not much.

 

If you for example in Resolve 15 adds lots of effect and stuff with fusion, then it can start to use much more vram. With my previous GPU that had 3, it usually used 1-2, but added just two not even that advanced fusion created effects, after little bit of scrolling through the two parts, got an error the title run out of those 3.

is there any serious problem if i run out of vram?

will the software crush? or it will only take much time to edit?

I dont remember with my old GPU, but with my new one, when I tried to use up all 8 GB it has(just added multiple built in 3D text on the video untill it reached it), it just started to use normal RAM instead that was available as "Shared RAM" and when it did, the hole Resolve 15 with fusion worked slower and got quite laggy but didn't crash.
