Which do you prefer (More FPS at low or vice versa)?

Just to show how much changing settings can make to frames per second without making that much difference.

I personally prefer the higher frame-rate.

 

Game: Warframe

On Processor: i3-4030U

Graphics: Intel HD 4400

(Note: The scene in in a small area so frames are higher than in-game ~+10FPS)

 

First Image:

1366x778

Highest Graphics Preset

 

Second Image:

800x600

Lowest Preset

 

P.S: Sorry, my method of showing fps is not accurate. I am aware of that.

I know that second one looks like a potato but it is far more playable and doesn't burn my leg when I play it.

I know but this laptop is pretty old and I wanted to test on a low spec computer.
I only use it for browsing and MS Office.

Personally, I would have just gotten a better GPU at the time of purchase if I had wanted to game on it.

I tried that. It was around 40-50 FPS.
It is better and playable but it gets so hot.

Sadly, It's on an old laptop.
Can't change the gpu.

Do you have an Xbox or PS controller?

 

If so then I'd recommend capping the framerate to 30fps and going for best quality.

 

If not then I'd adjust the settings so that you get the best visual quality without dropping substantially below 60fps.

Yes, I do cap it. I just uncapped it to demonstrate.
I'm fine with 30FPS with this low powered machine. Atleast they are consistent that way.

I was only recommending it for completely stable always 30fps to mimic console if you have a controller.

 

For keyboard and mouse use, at least 60fps which in this case would mean a compromise between low and high

No, I don't have a console.
This is on an old computer. I only use it for browsing, MS Office and home entertainment now.

For 60FPS, I think I will require better hardware. This scene is rendering an indoor scene so that's why the frames are higher than usual. In battles they dip to 50-60s by themselves.

Then are you okay with that quality setting? If so then perhaps it's worth sticking with that.

Warframe is not the kind of game you can play at low FPS.

I think that while 800x600 is a little extreme, I do usually downscale games to play at a higher frame rate. It just feels so choppy to play at a struggling 40-50 vs stepping the resolution down one step and getting a much more fluid 60. That's exactly what I did with fallout4 when I was still running a gtx760 . I stepped my res down to 1680-1050 instead of 1900-1200 ( old monitor) so that I could get a stable 60fps. I don't really try to get higher frames than 60 though. (not really a problem anymore now that I have a 1060)
