[Build Log] Rustic Wooden PC [in progress]

You could've diluted it and sprayed it with an airbrush, it could possibly work with that paint as I've done it with paints like that before where I didn't want to brush it on

Indeed, I bought a cheap airbrush on eBay exactly for this specific reason. It has worked wonders for difficult to paint surfaces that would otherwise produce such brush strikes.

Yeah, I thought about using an air brush, but I don't have one, nor do I have the funds to buy one right now. But it's something both my wife and I are interested in as she refinishes antique furniture as her own small home business. Might price some out before my next projects. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Here's some of the copper pieces. Like I mentioned, didn't turn out as "clean" as I would like, but when I'm done doing what I'm going to do with them, it shouldn't matter. ;)

i mean for sure it's copper or iron based, but doesn't the primer affect heat transfer? Am I worrying to much?

but great work, and I think the brush streaks really suit the build, I think it needs a texture. With airbrush it would be to plain IMO

Using the copper paint was definitely an excellent choice! I truely like the copper coloured result, and you haven't even corroded the parts yet :)

How have you managed to paint in between the fins of the heatsinks?

By the way... why don't we see more fully copper heatsinks? (price of course)

However, those would look so much nicer than the aluminium onces that we have now.

I have bought one of those ridiculously cheap ones that you can find on eBay. It's perfect to give "larger" areas a monotone colour (like for example those heatsinks). But due to its limted accuracy, it's not suited for fine detailed work like painting images, drawing lines etc.

Funny you should mention cars, I love rat rods and that's partly where some of the inspiration cam from for this build. ;)

Is that yours? Looks incredible!

That must have taken a lot of patina spray, no? :P:D

Just wondering... any progress update? :P

Been busy this week. Haven't had much time to work on it. My schedule is all clear tomorrow, so should be able to get a bunch of painting done.

Here's a teaser. ;)

So yesterday I got the first coat of iron paint on the steel parts. Will put the second coat on today and apply the first coat of bronze on the fans (not looking forward to that, lol).

Also applied the final coat of copper on the coolers and ram, then sprayed them with the "magic sauce" Patina corrosion spray. The following pics are progressive shots of the effects from about 1 hour after spraying to about 7-8 hours after spraying. Now I need to seal them with matte clear coat to stop the corrosion and lock-in the appearance. The cool thing about this is it's not fake. It's actual corroded copper. :)

Pics in spoiler because there's a lot. ;)

OMG! This looks awesome! :x

I wanted to say: "this looks sooo real", but it actually IS real corroded copper :P

The ram modules for example, I really like how you've selectively corroded some spots more than others. I assume that you did not simply spray the patina on the components, since that won't give you that result, does it?

What kind of coating are you using to seal the paint? A spray can? I'm afraid that, if you brush the coating on to the parts, it might smudge the copper oxide though.

Wonderfully done! :)

Thanks. Yeah, so far it's turning out better than I expected. Actually I did spray on the patina, but I only sprayed certain parts of each piece so it would hopefully look more natural.

For sealing them, I'll use matte clear coat from a spray can. Yeah, no I definitely won't be brushing on the clear coat. ;)

Are you also building something similar?

Are you keeping a build log? :)

Just had a peak. Sweet build! You did an amazing job with that painting and colour theme. Very nice! I love the Inwin 303, I'm using a white one right now with my main gaming rig. One of the best looking cases on the market right now and has awesome airflow and cooling. :) Love what you did with the cables too. Really nice build.

Final coat of iron will go on tonight and then it's time to make some rust. :D

Still haven't painted the fans yet though. Such a pain. lol. Have to use this little tiny brush I have because the larger brushes just push the paint around instead of leaving a good proper coat. Takes a lot longer, but does a better job.

Once all the parts are ready to go back together, I'll need to do some more cable management for the HDDs and figure out where the SSD will be mounted.

More updates hopefully later tonight.

Thanks, there's still a lot to do with it yet though. Need to do the waterloop and cut the window out in the front and a few other things but been so busy. I work full time and going to school, I have 2 research essays due Sunday for 2 separate classes so time is just not on my side lol. And yeah Its definitely one of the nicest cases Ive had

Not too much progress over this week. It's been stinking hot here lately and only has just cooled down today. That and I've had a few customers his week that take priority.

Aside from that, got a few more coats of the iron paint on a bunch of the parts. One more coat and they will be ready to rust!

Also found a better toggle switch for the power switch. It's a spring-loaded toggle which works better for a PC power switch and it looks better suited to match the theme. I'll probably just spray the patina right on it and let it corrode directly, then spray it with clear to seal it.

Still looking for a pair of small old-school light bulbs to use for the power and HDD activity lights. Found some automotive sockets and bulbs at a local store, but not sure if I want to use those particular ones. Will keep looking, but at least there's an option available.

Here's some more pics of the copper parts. The longer you leave the pieces with patina exposed, the more they corrode. They're pretty much just as I want them now, so will pick up some matte clear coat tonight to seal these parts up. :)

The iron (steel) parts:

The new power toggle switch:

Also need to make the PSU look old and worn out. Going to remove the outer cover and fan, then roughly sand the cover, then spray with patina to make it rust.

I thought you already painted the fans bronze (see first picture of your previous post). Or is that the "base colour"?
