I need help with my shin splits

Adrian18102001

So 5 weeks ago I started getting pain in my inner legs on the edge of my shins which I didn't pay too much attention too so I carried on playing basket ball every other day and doing mountain biking and normal cycling once a week ( I usually cycle for around 20 miles) and now I'm on the 6th week and it hasn't gone away and it's become bad as the pain pretty much never goes away unless I sit down for 30 minutes but once I stand up again it comes back and when it does the pain is very sharp and I find it difficult to walk. I get the pain just from simply walking up my stairs which are around 8ft tall and have 12 steps. I really need help as I don't know if I should just wait it out or visit a doctor as the pain is pretty severe as I don't think you should get sharp pain from walking up some stairs in your house or after exercising for 3 minutes. Thanks

Also as I write this I have been laying in bed for 30 minutes and I'm still experiencing moderate pain and occasional sharp pain for a second or 2 and this is whole resting as soon as I start walking the sharp pain kicks in and doesn't go away

As always, if it concerns your health and you have doubts: go see a doctor.

You shouldn't have to ask that here. You're walking around with a severe pain for 5 weeks that's not normal... could be (hair)fractures or something else, but it likely won't go away on its own as you noticed.

I also have to walk for 10-15 minutes to my bus stop from Monday to Friday and I still play basketball but I have dropped cycling for now

As said tikker said, go see a doctor. Why ask for medical advice on a computer forum? That's like asking a plumber for legal advice or a butcher for vegetarian menus.

Have to agree with the others, go see a doctor.

In the mean time, do you stretch before workouts and after?  I had bad shin splits when going through basic training (the marching really does a number).  What helped me out was doing stretches specifically for the shin and leg area.  But still, go see a doctor.

How old are you? Maybe you're just growing.

Have you tried giving your body a break for a bit? Sometimes recovery is helpful.

If it still persists after that I'd maybe see a doctor. You could always ask a personal trainer their take on it, if you frequent a gym and don't feel comfortable or have the patience to wait to see a doctor.
