Rumour: China using DJI drones to spy on US

Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/867451-us-dhs-dji-drones-being-used-to-spy-by-china/

Source 2:

  • A memo from the Los Angeles office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau (ICE) alleges that data captured from DJI drone customers in the US is being provided to the Chinese government.

  • The Memo, originally issued in August, says that the officials assess "with moderate confidence that Chinese-based company DJI Science and Technology is providing US critical infrastructure and law enforcement data to the Chinese government."

  • This information is based on,

    • "open source reporting and a reliable source within the unmanned aerial systems industry with first and secondhand access."

  • It concludes that it, "assesses with high confidence the critical infrastructure and law enforcement entities using DJI systems are collecting sensitive intelligence that the Chinese government could use to conduct physical or cyber attacks against the United States and its population."

  • DJI's appears to be targeting users with the ability to disrupt critical infrastructure,"

    • railroads, utilities, companies that provide drinking water, weapon storage facilities.

  • DJI statement: the memo was "based on clearly false and misleading claims."

  • In August, a US Army memo directed its members to immediately stop using all DJI products due to cybersecurity concerns.

    • Shortly thereafter, DJI released its Local Data Mode, which allows users to cut off drones from all internet activity.

    • a D.J.I. spokesman said that users can control how much access the company can have to their data and that it shares data only “pursuant to appropriate legal process.”

  • The I.C.E. memo focused on the drones used by companies and institutions, not the drones flown by hobbyists

EA Sports UFC 3 Egregious Implementation of Microtransactions

Source 1: posted by SC2Mitch https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/867322-ea-sports-ufc-3-egregious-implementation-of-microtransactions/

Source 2: https://www.astutegaming.com/single-post/EASPORTSUFC3BETA

  • Beta invitations for EA Sports’ UFC 3 have been sent to select players and it seems EA has completely one-upped itself in the loot box department.

  • Every single technique, ability, fighter, and stat roll, is entirely acquired and upgraded through the loot box system.

    • Pressing the square button to throw a punch at an opponent- the simplest and most obvious mechanic in an MMA game- will do more damage if players have paid money.

  • Microtransactions are also the only means of acquiring perks and boosts.

    • Perks are powerful abilities that can be equipped for a small number of fights before expiring

    • Boosts are temporary enhancements that offer endurance boosts and durability bonuses

Microsoft is bringing Tabs to every Windows 10 App

Source 1:  posted by NonaHexa https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/866746-microsoft-is-bringing-tabs-to-every-windows-10-app/

Source 2: https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/28/16709190/microsoft-windows-10-tabs-file-explorer-sets-feature

Source 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lEjuU-XFHg

  • Microsoft is planning to add tabs- like the ones in your web browser- to apps in Windows 10, allowing you to group apps together.

  • They’re calling this feature “Sets”

  • Say you’re working on a Word document and you need to research data on the web or grab notes from PowerPoint, you could create Sets (or tabs) of these tasks in a single window.

  • Microsoft is planning to extend these tabs to standard desktop apps like File Explorer or Notepad, and eventually to apps that have custom title bars like Photoshop. Microsoft is aiming to let iPhone and Android users start Sets and then resume them on a PC or vice versa.

    • It’s a logical extension of Timeline, which groups together your apps in a similar way so you can resume them across mobile and PCs

  • The feature will be initially limited to Universal Windows Apps.

  • An updated desktop version of Office will support Sets early next year.

Websites use your CPU to mine cryptocurrency EVEN WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR BROWSER

Source 1: hey_yo_ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/867035-websites-use-your-cpu-to-mine-cryptocurrency-even-when-you-close-your-browser/

  • Over the past month or two, “drive-by” crypto-mining has emerged as a way to mine Monero using the electricity and CPU resources of millions of unsuspecting people as they surf the web.

  • Now, researchers from Malwarebytes have identified a technique that allows the leaching to continue even after a user has closed the browser window.

  • It works by opening a ‘pop-under’ window that fits behind the Microsoft Windows taskbar and hides behind the clock.

  • As long as the user doesn’t notice this small window, they’ll continue to generate Monero on behalf of the person controlling the Website.

  • The code running in the hidden browser window takes special care not to max out the CPU resources of the computer it’s running on.

  • the technique works on the latest version of Chrome running on the latest versions of Windows 7 and Windows 10.

    • At the moment, there are no indications it’s being used on other browsers and operating systems

  • Chinese sources are reporting through information acquired from motherboard makers in Taiwan that Intel’s 9th generation flagship will pack more cores than the current fastest mainstream processor.

    • Core i7-9700K, will pack 8 cores and 16 threads. (up from 6/12)

    • Core i5 chips will be packing a 6 core and 12 thread design. (up from 6 cores and 6 threads while the i7 lineup features 6 cores and 12 threads)

    • The Core i3 series will be getting 4 cores and 8 threads (compared to 4 cores and 4 threads on Coffee Lake)

Samsung Developing Graphene Batteries

Source 1: posted by Todotoad https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/866190-samsung-developing-graphene-batteries/

Source 2: https://www.androidcentral.com/samsungs-use-graphene-batteries-increases-charge-speed-five-times

  • Samsung's Advanced Institute of Technology has been working with graphene to both increase battery capacity and drastically reduce recharge times.

  • Samsung's used the material to create a "graphene ball" – a special coating that's used inside a typical lithium-ion battery that's found in most modern smartphones.

  • Samsung has reportedly been able to increase battery capacity by as much as 45% and increase the speed of charging by five times.

    • Imagine charging your phone from 0 to 100% in 20 mins

  • The new batteries still hold a charge retention of 78-percent even after 500 total charge cycles.

PUBG Coming to Mobile

Source 1: posted by Dreaper https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/866487-pubg-to-come-to-mobile/

Source 2: https://qz.com/1139315/playerunknowns-battlegrounds-pubg-is-coming-to-mobile-with-tencents-help/

  • Tencent will co-develop an official mobile version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) through a partnership with the game’s South Korean developer Bluehole.

  • Tencent- who owns China’s most popular social network WeChat, as well as Clash of Clans and League of Legends- won the exclusive rights to publish and distribute PUBG in China.

  • Tencent secured these two deals despite an earlier notice from Chinese media watchdogs that PUBG and similar survival games are not likely to get a license to officially launch in China because they contain too much blood and gore.

    • PUBG’s mobile version will retain the “core gameplay” of the original PC title, but it will also strictly abide by “relevant policies and regulations,” just like the PC version does in China.

  • The mobile game will first be released in China, though Tencent has not offered details on a release date.

  • PUBG is finally coming to Xbox this month, but despite the developer’s best efforts, it will NOT be running at 60 FPS- neither on the regular Xbox One, nor the XBox One X

  • The game will run at 30 FPS on all Xbox devices, at least for the foreseeable future.

Chrome to stop third-party software injections

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/12/chrome-will-block-third-party-software-from-meddling-with-its-processes/

  • To boost the stability of Chrome, Google will start blocking third-party software from being injected into the browser.

  • Third-party software such as anti-virus scanners and video driver utilities often injects libraries into running processes to do things like inspect network traffic, or add custom menu options to menus.

  • Google has found that people who have such injected code are 15% more likely to see their browser crash. As such, it's going to start blocking such injections.

  • The change will roll out gradually:

    • When crashes occur in Chrome 66, due in April 2018, the browser will warn users that there is something injected that could be causing problems.

    • Chrome 68, due in July 2018, will start by blocking the injection; if the browser doesn't run properly, it'll allow the injected software but show a warning.

    • Chrome 72, due in January 2019, will block code injection entirely.

  • Google will also allow certain exemptions even after Chrome 72, like Accessibility software (such as screen readers), and any code that's been signed by Microsoft

Google bans Android Lock Screen ads

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/12/google-bans-android-developers-from-adding-lock-screen-ads/

  • Google Play Developer monetization rules have been updated to ban lock screen ads:

    • “Unless the exclusive purpose of the app is that of a lockscreen, apps may not introduce ads or features that monetize the locked display of a device.”

  • It’s currently not possible to show an ad on the lock screen

  • But developers can replace the existing lock screen, without asking, and showing a screen that can have a big ad slapped onto the lower half.

  • This is only a Play Store rule and won't affect devices that are sold with lock screen ads built-in.

    • Amazon sells "Prime Exclusive Phones" with "special offers" built-in. These phones show full-screen lock screen ads and pack the phone with non-removable Amazon apps.

The Boring Company proposes 150mph “Loop” for Chicago express train

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2017/11/chicago-seeks-a-high-speed-ohare-link-boring-company-to-propose-125mph-loop/

  • On Wednesday, the city of Chicago opened a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for an express train that would take passengers from the city’s O’Hare airport to downtown.

  • Elon Musk’s Boring Company—a tunneling company that the SpaceX and Tesla CEO started last year—has responded to the request.

  • The Boring Company is proposing “a high-speed underground public transportation system in which passengers are transported on autonomous electric skates traveling at 125-150 miles per hour. Electric skates will carry between 8 and 16 passengers, or a single passenger vehicle.”

  • Wednesday’s RFQ specified that any service that the city would consider should offer:

    • travel times of 20 minutes or less between the two hubs,

    • departures every 15 minutes.

    • Any “premium” fares would have to cost less than any ride-hailing service.

Tinder tests using A.I. to suggest who to ‘Super Like’

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2017/12/01/tinder-tests-a-new-feature-that-uses-a-i-to-suggest-who-to-super-like/

  • Tinder is testing a new feature called Super Likeable that intermittently presents a card on your screen and offers you a bonus Super Like that can be sent to one of four people presented on the card.

  • The original Super Like was designed as a way to signal your interest in a potential match was stronger than others, but users have a limited number per day.

  • Super Likeable is powered by artificial intelligence that helps select the people it thinks will be “of special interest to you.”

    • Tinder tell us, broadly, it’s using a history of your interactions on the service to figure out who sparks your interest.

  • Some people think Super Likes are creepy or desperate, but Super Likeable will only pop up on occasion, making it feel more like a bonus

    • Tinder’s own data indicates that Super Likes are highly effective, increasing your likelihood of matching by three times.

Google Home learns how to multitask, annoys James.

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2017/11/30/google-home-learns-how-to-multitask/

  • This week Google Home was silently updated such that it is now possible for the device to accomplish two different missions at the same time.

  • For example, you could ask it to cast a music video to your TV, and then engage it in a Trivia party game.

  • It can’t execute more than 2 commands at once

  • You must issue the two commands separately, as Home still can’t chain commands.

  • Why it’s annoying- James says:

“I sometimes ask Google Home to play a song on Spotify and forget to specify that I want it to play from the TV, so it plays from the Home device instead. Then, I try to correct the action by re-issuing the command with the words “on the TV” at the end. This used to do-over my mistake, but with the update all I get is the song playing from BOTH the TV and the Home device”

Apple designing its own power mgmt chips for iPhone

Source 1: https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/30/apple-designing-own-iphone-power-chips/

  • Apple plans to replace around half of the main power management chips that go into iPhones with its own as early as 2018

  • The main power management chip controls an iPhone's battery, including charging capabilities and energy consumption.

  • Apple's in-house version will supposedly be "the most advanced in the industry,"

  • Tt could be a serious blow for Dialog Semiconductor, the British company that exclusively designs the current main power management chip for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models.

    • Apple reportedly accounted for nearly three quarters of Dialog Semiconductor's revenue in 2016.

    • The company's stock fell nearly 20 percent after the news broke.

Super Mario Breakfast Cereal

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2017/11/30/super-mario-takes-a-sugar-odyssey-with-a-new-breakfast-cereal/

  • Mario finally has his own cereal, courtesy of Kellogg’s.

  • It’s got a Lucky Charms-esque vibe, with a mix of power-up marshmallows and cereal stars, flavored with something called a “blast of mixed berry.”

  • It comes with an on-box cheat code that unlocks gold coins and hearts in Super Mario Odyssey

  • Hits shelves mid-month.

10x Faster 3D Printing

Source 1: posted by werto165 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/867189-10x-improvement-in-3d-printing-speeds-from-mit/

Source 2: http://news.mit.edu/2017/new-3-d-printer-10-times-faster-commercial-counterparts-1129

Source 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wVGaxgkmk4

  • MIT engineers have developed a new desktop 3-D printer that performs up to 10 times faster than existing commercial counterparts (video above)

  • The key to the design lies in the printer’s compact printhead, which incorporates a screw mechanism that feeds polymer material through a nozzle at high force; and a laser, built into the printhead, that rapidly heats and melts the material, enabling it to flow faster through the nozzle.

  • Fast 3-D printing creates valuable new ways of working:

    • “If I’m a repair technician and I could have a fast 3-D printer in my vehicle, I could 3-D-print a repair part on-demand after I figure out what’s broken.”

Am I the only one who either receives a late notification from Twitch or that Twitch doesn’t push notifications to all devices? I have Twitch installed on both my iPhone and iPad and I mostly just get notifications from my iPad but no Twitch push notification about the WAN show for my iPhone which is always with me.

Edit:

Now it’s a waiting game for YouTube ?

I'll admit that image "defining" the resolutions was a bit odd but watching Linus stumble through trying to understand the numbers was painful lol

*K just means a resolution roughly that wide.  We have come to expect them to be 16:9 but it is not actually implied by the "*K" naming scheme.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Man, my admiration for Linus as an employer and manager went very high. He’s seen business predictions and was right to leave and take his two best buddies with him and now he’s successful. Linus once mentioned his beef with NCIX bosses when the NCIX YouTube channel is shutting down but he never went into detail on his beef with NCIX bosses until now.

Just now, VegetableStu said:

Then regular "full" HD (1920) should be 2K? Right now everyone means 2160 when they say 2K ._.

Eh, HD should just refer to the ratio, lol. (although one would start having problems when one tires to put a name to a ratio while some phones are almost 2:1 either direction, lol)

Then the multiplier should refer to how many times the dimensions doubled from base. e.g.:

HD = 1920

2HD = 3840

3HD = 7680, etc

Man, why do companies/consortiums prescribe so weak and shitty descriptors ._.

1920 x 1080 could be described under the much less specific term 2K, yes, but you are right that would probably cause problems since a lot of people use 2K to refer to 2560 x 1440 for some reason

IMO when NCIX closed it's ontario stores i kinda figured they were doomed, I'm actually shocked CC Pulled a Walmart/Target with Zellars (one of the 2 took over the old locations of Z).

My explanation why CC is ∞% better as a store.

Also Linus Amazon crushing the computer market? Maybe but would you buy this HDD knowing it's a Pillow Cover, a CPU Processor, and a home textile all in one? I wouldn't think it would be very reliable as a drive...

https://www.amazon.ca/Gold-10TB-Datacenter-Hard-Drive/dp/B01IWCMS5M/

All seriousness however, I had a similar situation at an old workplace where I nagged on them to actually get a proper computer system for the whole company instead of just the office people who only used it for Facebook etc... That said company might not be around for much longer either, but hey when you get millions in your head you lose logic it seems. Basically Financial Want (more money now) VS Financial Logic (more money that works regardless of timeline), Want always seem to win.

@Slick

About bringing up sets of a few opened apps - in Windows 10 you can use virtual desktops for that. Rarely use this feature myself, but it's quite handy from time to time.

not actually a part of the HDMI 2.1 news?

I've checked their site, their press release, and various news outlets but I don't see anything about it.

Maybe whoever made the WAN show doc accidentally added something from the Marseille spec onto the HDMI 2.1 notes?

Luke asked about "Supreme Bankruptcy", it simply refers to the fact that the matter is in the Supreme Court of British Columbia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_British_Columbia) which is the court where bankruptcy matters for Vancouver are heard. The other cases listed were heard in the small claims division of the provincial court. It doesn't mean anything special about the bankruptcy itself.

Linus talks about how one of the agreements with him leaving (with the LTT brand) was that he'd still support the NCIX Tech Tips channel, I'm guessing that contract ended 2015 or NCIX otherwise told Linus they no longer wanted/needed him on the channel.
