Can't boot in to any os

Noobie Knight

Hello everyone

I recently updated my BIOS on my motherboard but I then got issues when booting in to windows, well it was impossible. I believed it was a boot error so I created a windows installation media and tried to recreate the boot sectors. But I was unable to boot in to the windows media, the system just froze while on the windows loading circle.

I therefore concluded that something went wrong with the BIOS update so I flashed the older BIOS that I had before. But it changed nothing (I also restored all settings to default). At this point I was very confused. I tried to boot in to an Ubuntu installation USB just to see if I could,  but without any success (got a black screen with one line of text, see attachment).

The only thing I got running was memtest86.

I now think that my motherboard is bricked but I am not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

Remove all components from motherboard except for ONE (1) stick of RAM, your CPU / heatsink, and the power supply. I guess keep your GPU installed to, since you have no on board graphics, and only have a keyboard and mouse plugged in. Unplug all other USB devices, all hard drives / SSD's, and any other external peripherals you have. Boot the computer; you should see a "No operating system found / reboot and select proper boot device error" or something similar.

If not, you might need to reset your CMOS by unplugging the computer from power, removing the CR2032 battery from the motherboard, and pressing power to discharge the Power Supply. Then put the battery back and power it on; see if you can enter the BIOS. If you can, start re-adding things to the PC, one component at a time. I'd actually just try booting from a known good working Live Linux USB that you've tested on another system, just to make sure the thing boots. Then start adding hard drives one by one until it won't boot anymore, because I suspect it's a hard drive detection issue.

Hello, I have now tested everything that you suggested. Nothing changed after step one.

After step 2 i now get closer to launching bootable Linux usb, but it crashes just before it launches. It crashes exactly like it did before.

I have tested with both sticks of ram one by one with 2 different graphics cards, a GT640 and a GTX 1070. With nothing else.

Then at this point I'd blame your motherboard since it sounds like it straight up won't detect even the USB properly or has a problem with I/O operations.

If understand your post correctly, you're still able to boot into the BIOS and make changes. If everything is set back to default, then there's a few things you can try.

Create a bootable CD or DVD. I suspect booting from USB is the problem. If you can boot from a CD/DVD then you know everything is fine.

To try and get the USB working, check for a "Legacy USB boot" option. If it's on, turn it off. If it's off, turn it on. I've seen that mess with USB booting depending on how the USB is set up.

That's the weird part I can't boot in to any OS or bootable USB, the only thing that have been successful is memtest86
