Sennheiser hd598 se vs Beyerdynamic dt990

I am going to buy one of these headphones or the audio technica ad500x, 700x or 900x. Which one is more comfortable (probably the Sennheisers), which one has better sound quality and which one is best for gaming, music or both? Which one has the most immersive experience? If you could get one which one would you get. Also what is the difference between the sennheiser hd598 and hd598 se? By the way I do not want a headset. I am also planning on making YouTube videos and am going to get a mic. Will the sound leakage of the open back headphones be heard in the mic? I am open for more recommendations if you know anything better.

The 990dts is exteemely comfy to most People and Got decent soundstage. Have not tried the others so I can't give you an answer. Pretty sure @Dackzy has tried both the 598 and 990s

Shouldn't be an issue unless you like to have volumes cranked up very high, or you are setting up mic wrong. Though, you would need a very specialised mic or a headset with very good mic (I know you don't want headset, but it may be the only way depending on your setup and environment).

Only headphones I've tried are beats... I know I know they are bad quality.

 

I play a variety of games ranging from competitive games to open world games.

 

Gaming immersion is most important but tactical advantage is still something I want. Also gaming is far more important than music.

 

My budget can go a little more but I don't want to spend $1000.

Then I would not suggest any of the Audio Technica headphones you have mentioned. They are very good at providing you with large soundstage, but they sound very "thin" You are not going to feel the low end frequencies that well. They are quite good for competitive games that you absolutely will gain from "tactical sound play", but its not gonna provide you with better gaming experiences in genres like RPGs.

 

Out of the two you have mentioned in the title, I would probably go with Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. That should give you more "oomf" in the lower end that gives the headphone more full sound, helping you in the immersion part.

What headphones (not only these two) would you say are the best for a mix of immersion and tactical advantage? Would you still choose the 990s?

I personally love both. However, if you fall into the generic YouTuber trap and get a Blue Yeti, buy the closed back headphones. The Yeti picks up so much sound, and it's so annoying! I prefer the 990's, but the choice is yours.

I would get AKG 712 (my general use stuff) Pro or AKG 7XX (if Massdrop has it up).

I also really like Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro, but thats like US$600, so I am not sure if you would be interested in it.

 

If I am playing competitive, I use Audio Technica ADG1.

I still consider this the best audio device for competitive play.

Its a headset, so it might not be appealing for you.

Isn't that with any product? Nothing is perfect and nothing is for everyone.

 

Audio is very subjective stuff so its best for you to go to a shop and try it yourself.

 

Reading stuff online without actually experiencing it can only get you so far.

To be frank, unless you know exactly what you want, or know what kind of sound you actually like (as you don't really have a varied experience with quality audio equipment yet), anything too expensive would not be recommended as you might not be able to appreciate or understand whats good about them.

 

Those two are relatively inexpensive and does provide a solid baseline towards your future audio experiences. Once you experience them, you will know what you like about them and what you don't. This will guide you towards your next "upgrade".

Ok I think I'll get the dt990s.

I've tried both. 990s are definitely more 'fun' and bassier so lows are more pronounced on these. 598 has the better soundstage, one of the best even among mid-fi cans, more neutral and also the instrument separation is better on these. Vocals also feel livelier-more in your face with 598s. 990s were a bit clampy to me but they probably get better in time. You can't go wrong with either of them. Sorry for the usage of audiophile terms but that's the best way I can describe how they sound.

Do you use an amp for the 990s? Have you tried them without an amp? How does it work? I think the dt990s are best for me.

I tried them in a Hi-Fi audio store. Don't really know what type of amp was used or if they were being amped at all. I believe there are several versions of 990s. If you don't have an amp get the 80 ohms version. You won't be unleashing their full potential without an amp if you go higher than that. IMO an amp still makes a difference even on the 598s which are very efficient cans. Like I said you can't go wrong with either of these.

Most motherboards today can do 90-95% of what an amp can do though. Also have you ever owned beats? How would you compare the bass and over all sound quality of them to the 990 and 598.
