Baby oil as a thermal paste substitute.

TechDinamo122

Ok so here is the story I was cleaning off the old thermal paste off my cpu then I went to get my tube of thermal paste then I noticed something my tube was empty so im now using baby oil on my Q6600 and is getting temps average of 45c to 55c are they good temps?

I mean, isn't baby oil fairly thin? Didn't it just run off the CPU and into the socket? I can't imagine it will work long term if it's even working at the moment.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

@Theguywhobea It might create a small layer between the heatsink and the CPU. Don't know how it's called, but some liquids like to "crawl up into tight spaces". Like how a sugar cube will melt (suck up liquid) when you hold it partly in your coffee. How when you notice a paper towel suck up liquids above the origional higth.

Is baby oil even conductive? I have so many questions.

Baby oil is just mineral oil with some fragrant compounds. So it will work but not long term as it will slowly seep out from between the IHS and cooler mount unless you were to lap precisely enough your cooler surface and IHS so that stiction without any TIM was an issue.
