Court rules that Apple cannot supply ‘refurbished or remanufactured’ iPads as warranty replacements

Source 1: posted by CaptainGazzz https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/771998-dutch-court-rules-that-apple-cannot-supply-%E2%80%98refurbished-or-remanufactured%E2%80%99-ipads-as-warranty-replacements/

Source 2: https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/25/can-apple-provide-a-refurbished-remanufactured-ipad-under-warranty-netherlands-holland/

  • Following a previous Dutch court ruling that Apple cannot provide refurbished products as warranty replacements, a new ruling has outlawed ‘remanufactured’ units also.

    • Apple must, the court found, supply brand new models exactly as it would to a paying customer

  • Apple’s refurbished products are ones which have been sold and later returned to the company. They are returned to as-new standard, and given the same warranty as brand new devices. In addition to being used for warranty replacements, they are also made available for sale at a typical discount of around 14-15%.

  • Remanufactured products are newly-manufactured but may include used parts harvested from broken models. These are not made available for sale, says the company, but used only as warranty replacements.

  • Customer service perspective vs. Environmental perspective

AMD stock price falls >20% in single day

Source 1: posted by AnonymousGuy https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/774560-amd-stock-price-falls-20-in-single-day-on-lackluster-q1-earnings/

Source 2: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-stock-ryzen-cpu-share,34314.html

  • Shares of Advanced Micro Devices plunged on Tuesday following a first-quarter report that failed to justify the stock's 300% gain last year.

  • AMD stock was down 19% at 11:40 a.m.

  • AMD reported strong results that were in line with expectations, but the fickle stock market punished the company after it revealed lower-than-expected margins and relatively low Q2 margin guidance

    • AMD reported a 33% margin for Q2, which is only slightly lower than the 34% it posted in Q1.

  • AMD reported $984 million in revenue (up 18% year over year) and a $29 million net operating loss (down from $73 million year over year) as it claws its way back to profitability.

    • The company also reported an 18% revenue increase due to Ryzen and GPU sales.

  • But there’s still hope!

    • AMD has shipped Ryzen processors for only one month of the quarter, and it also has Vega slated for release in Q2.

    • Their Naples platform will also help, as will market share gains in the lucrative data center segment

    • Ryzen 3 processors are also slated for the second half of the year, which could help boost sales volume.

Valve Limits Steam’s Gifting System Without Warning

Source 1: https://techraptor.net/content/valve-limits-steam-gifting

Source 2: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/57380/steams-gift-changes-hurt-key-resellers-gamers/index.html

  • Valve has announced several changes to Steam’s gifting system.

  • Before,

    • users on Steam could purchase a game as a gift and store that copy in their inventory for later use.

    • When sending games, users could either deliver the gift directly through Steam or attach it to an email through the client if you weren’t friends with the giftee on the service.

  • With the changes, you cannot store gifts for future use.

    • When purchasing a game you already own, you are forced to choose a recipient of the gift and a time when it will be delivered.

    • Sending games through email is now impossible

    • it is now possible to schedule a game to be delivered months in advance.

  • Collectors have often used Steam’s gift inventory to store and trade copies of delisted Steam titles

  • These changes will also affect users who trade and sell Steam gifts on third party websites

  • gifts you already have stored will not be affected

Qualcomm to Seek U.S. Import Ban for iPhones

Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/775378-continuing-applequalcomm-saga-qualcomm-plans-to-petition-itc-to-ban-iphone-imports/

Source 2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-03/qualcomm-said-to-seek-u-s-import-ban-for-iphones

  • Incensed over Apple Inc.’s decision to stop paying it billions of dollars in licensing fees for smartphone chips, Qualcomm Inc. plans to retaliate by asking a U.S. trade agency to ban US imports of iPhones

  • The ITC has the power to block the import of goods into the U.S. and processes cases more quickly than federal district courts

  • The current iPhone uses a mixture of Intel Corp. and Qualcomm modems to connect to networks. Up until the iPhone 7, Qualcomm was the exclusive supplier of that crucial part.

  • The company’s patents cover the fundamentals of how data and voice is encoded and transmitted between networks and phones. By stopping payment to contract manufacturers who make the iPhone -- who, in turn, pay Qualcomm -- Apple is interfering with contracts that predate the debut of the iPhone, Qualcomm argues.

  • A successful appeal to the ITC could potentially lock it out of the U.S. market, which accounts for 40 percent of Apple’s total sales.

SpaceX to launch broadband satellites in 2019

Source 1: posted by NonHexa https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/775181-spacex-to-launch-broadband-satellites-in-2019/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/05/spacexs-falcon-9-rocket-will-launch-thousands-of-broadband-satellites/

  • SpaceX today said its planned constellation of 4,425 broadband satellites will launch from the Falcon 9 rocket beginning in 2019 and continue launching in phases until reaching full capacity in 2024.

  • Later this year, SpaceX will begin the process of testing the satellites themselves, launching one prototype before the end of the year and another during the early months of 2018

  • The 4,425 satellites will "operate in 83 orbital planes (at altitudes ranging from 1,110km to 1,325km)," and "require associated ground control facilities, gateway Earth stations, and end-user Earth stations,"

  • SpaceX has also proposed an additional 7,500 satellites operating even closer to the ground, saying that this will boost capacity and reduce latency in heavily populated areas.

  • SpaceX's satellites will essentially operate as a mesh network and "allocate broadband resources in real time, placing capacity where it is most needed

  • Customer terminals will be the size of a laptop.

  • While speeds should hit a gigabit per second, SpaceX said it "intends to market different packages of data at different price points, accommodating a variety of consumer demands."

  • Current satellite ISPs have latencies of 600ms or more, according to FCC measurements, but SpaceX has said its own system will have latencies between 25 and 35ms.

Intel tells Core i7-7700K owners to stop overclocking

Source 1: posted by Mr.Meerkat https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/775456-intel-tells-core-i7-7700k-owners-to-stop-overclocking/

Source 2: http://www.pcgamer.com/intels-tells-core-i7-7700k-owners-to-stop-overclocking-to-avoid-high-temps/?

  • Some owners of Intel's Core i7-7700 and 7700K processors have been complaining for the past three months of unusual temperature increases of up  90C, close to the Core i7-7700's maximum 100C threshold

  • Intel’s response: “We do not recommend running outside the processor specifications, such as by exceeding processor frequency or voltage specifications, or removing of the integrated heat spreader (sometimes called 'de-lidding'). These actions will void the processor warranty."

Source 2: https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/68w9pl/aacs_20_cracked/

  • A Full-fledged copy of the 4K UHD Bluray release of The Smurfs 2 has been posted on private tracker ultrahdclub.org

  • The member who posted it claims this release was achieved through cracking the encryption of the drive itself and not through the more common HDCP stripping and capture method.

Source 2: http://www.theverge.com/2017/4/26/15435550/amazon-echo-look-200-smart-camera-mirror-stylist

ummm... not a good thing their buddy. Intel and AMD are corporations if one of them died the other will have a monopoly, which will basically create overpriced junk. 2600k to 6700k(7700k was a really bad joke with telling consumers not to overclock a k chip because they cheaped out on thermal paste, also 4k Netflix support) shows how much intel cares about pushing boundaries on the consumer platform. look i am not for or against's one company, i really want competition.

do you actually think that did anything in the industry?! I'll be laughing if you think so

a lot of people trough that Intel will immediately lower the prices, what happened?! it didn't ... duh!

WAN = Watch Adverts Now

33 mins into the show and so far they've spent less than 2 minutes talking about a news topic (that Linus abandoned without even finishing and went on a tangent about his personal stock market experience) and 31 minutes talking about LTX, FPC & SYW.

Who members when WAN was a news show and not a means for them to peddle their wares?
