Is it Worth it? SSD on an old system

Go to solution Solved by Colin Donoghue,

it would be worth the time and money because it will speed up your computer and after you are done using it for this pc you can use it wipe it if you want and just use it on another pc. It will speed up boot times

Hi, I have an old system (Yes its the Optiplex 960 I like it to much) and was wondering if it would be worth the time, money and effort to do this.

The system runs SATA 2, And the PCIe slot is Gen 2 (I think? I've tried everything to figure it out but I think it is Gen 2 at least) and was wondering if it would be worth it to l get a PCIe gen 3 SATA 3 storage card and plug an SSD into it. The booting times for this thing is 3 minutes and it gets turned on and off quite a lot. What do you guys think? Should I do it or not?

PCIe Gen 2 is 500 mb/s and SATA 3 is 600 mb/s so it would be a bottle neck

Wow this was old as heck, Need to update this signature!

Yeah, SSD is handsdaown the biggest upgrade you can make to a system IMO without changing everything. I run a Kingston V300 in my old macbook that only had Sata 1 speeds and the drive was Sata2 IIRC and was still a big upgrade.

Enjoy :)

Yes! Definitely get an SSD for your system. My sister has a 2009 MacBook (white plastic) and it had a slow SATA 2 drive that wade it run very slow, and I put a $60 120GB SSD in it and it runs fine. Having slow loading times when opening an application and while searching for files is a major part of what makes a computer feel slow. Also you could take out the optical drive and use that SATA with the old drive so you can use it for storage.
