RX 580 8GB Crossfire vs. GTX 1080

I was thinking of getting a GTX 1080 this past week, though some other stuff came up. I am still planning on doing a full custom loop, so I want to have some good graphics power. With the new release of the 580, I wanted to see if that would be a good option, since it won't be all that much more. If I go with the 1080 I will be getting a Xeon E3 and keeping my current mITX, if I go with the CF 580s then I will have to get a new board so at that point I will get a Ryzen 1600X.

its really up to you, i would go for the gtx 1080 unless you are going for looks than rx480 sli looks much cooler.

Never get two GPUs unless you're getting two of the top of the line GPUs. Go with a 1080, it'll be faster in pretty much every scenario anyways.

Well I will have stainless steel tubing so I think I'm pretty set on looks.

Get a single card, it's a lot less hassle to work with than trying to do two cards to almost match it.

Can you get two 1070's?

Cross Fire looks cooler and cost less. But single card offers better experience. 

 

I would go 580 crossfire because I'm a AMD fan.

No, I do not need that much power nor do I want to spend that much.

Considering that the price of SLI is not only at the card but motherboard and PSU too, wouldn't it make better sense to go 1080ti over 1070 SLI regardless? considering the high end gaming rig has no necessity for those beefy expensive motherboards.

SLI works in non-SLI boards. You're just getting a certification that it works since Nvidia hasn't given out their chipset in since X58(? Could be X78, but I can't remember). OP will have to do research though.

While I agree with what you said I had in mind that there's still the more budget friendly alternatives more or less like I did with my i7 7700 on a h110m and the fastest maxwell card back in the day over a sli alternative... Well I suppose that while both ways are somewhat equal at the end of the day it will fall down to OPs preference for a dual or single GPU setup rather than pure performance numbers [:

By all means, I would go single HUGE GPU like the 1080 Ti, but if OP wants a dual-setup, I'd suggest going with dual 1070's vs 580's.

so this is a hard decision becuz I'm facing the same thing, but if you look at the rx 580 a single card the performance is very similar to a 1060 and somnetimes will push itself to be equivalent to a 1070, so going with crossfire in my mind would definetly be the better deal, I know it wont surpass the 1080 at everything and may fall under it at times but the extra cores really really help, so I'm an AMD fan, so id say 580 cf is the way to go

I went with a single 1070.
