TWC/Spectrum Bad?

xDylanio

Well recently I switched from 15 mbps upload/1 mbps upload to 60 mbps upload/5 upload. But after testing that speed the highest I saw was 30 mbps upload and somewhere around 1.4 upload. I feel like this is a rip off. I'm paying $65 for 60 mbps download and 5 upload. Which is not what I am getting. But the thing is I am limited of options here. We don't have google fiber in the city in texas I live in. We don't have verizon fios. The best thing here is TWC/Spectrum. Even at&t isn't that good. It only had 40 mbps download and 1 mbps upload. I didn't even bother asking for the price cause it was going to be more. Honestly I don't know what to do. My house is used by a ton of devices, around 7 or so. But there is not reason for it to be so slow. I'm right next to my modem and using ethernet cat5e and only getting 30 and 1? Sounds bad to me.

Try the speeds at the middle of the night(think 3 am). and connect your test system directly to the modem, not the router.

Talk to the ISP. There isnt' much you can do.

I've set up an appointment for a technician to come and check out everything. But get this. there might be a "small" service fee of 39.99 usd. Which seems dumb cause it's there fault.

My father dealt with something similar to this and even though they had ZERO stores where he lives so he could return the equipment and they had to send someone to pick them up, he still got charged the fee, and this was after the call where they didn't even mention the fee. There is no might about it, you'll be paying the service fee unfortunately =/

My guess is the node your connected to is over loaded.

My understanding of cable companys is they use hybrid fiber coax. Generally they run fiber from the main office to a node out in the neighborhood. These nodes convert from Fiber to Coax. Then from the node to all the house you have coax. Nodes can support a few hundred people at a time. Some times, they have nested nodes, that are connected to another node before going to the main office. If Too many people are connected to the node then speeds slow down for every one. Thats why when you use the internet around prime time it tends to slow down on cable internet. Some cable providers like Comcast are eliminating nested nodes and splitting nodes so there are less people on them.

A second issue could be signal related. In some cases if you have issues connecting to all of the channels for down stream and upstream you could see lower speeds. BUT you also should see disconnects as well. You can check your signals most of the time by going here: 192.168.100.1. You can compare them to here: https://www.dslreports.com/faq/16085. If you are running with in spec then I would say the node is overloaded and your shit out of luck.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

With your speed test. Are you using speedtest.net? If so, choose the closest server physically to you.
