i have been recently been given an old notebook from a familay member and was hoping to use the thing for streaming video content and watching video when i am not near the main computer but it is using windows xp would anybody have any advise on what os to use the device is a HP compaq mini 700 series i have upgraded it to 2gb ram and the cpu is a intel atom N270 at 1.60ghz

I would just continue to use XP on it if you're not dealing with critical data. That being said, a form of Linux like Ubuntu might be a better choice since you can then run an updated web browser.

32bit of Windows 10 or 7 should be fine for basic tasks like web browsing and Videos.

Go with Linux Mint for a very simple, and easy to familiarize yourself with, operating system.

 

There are countless guides on how to install it, but if you have installed windows with a usb in the past, this would be just as easy.

 

Use Rufus to load de ISO to the usb, boot off it and you're off to the races...

Android is surprisingly better even with Pentium 3,4 even though it is touch optimized it is good with mouse too for basic things.

For a fast and really smooth performance when compared to other OSes Windows XP is the best bet it is really fast with Windows XP it is as if you are using i7 on Windows 10 but Windows 7 and 10 are surprisingly snappy with that old processor. I used to have an old pc before I bought this one. It is Intel D425KT with Atom D425 procesor with 1GB RAM and is snappy in Windows 7 and even I used to play AAA titles of 2000-2006. As per my findings Windows 10 actually improve performance like pentium 4 is a bit better in Windows 10 than Windows 7 by a small margin though so it should be good with 32 bit of Windows 7 or Windows 10.

Download a distro (usually an .ISO image) and use a program called Rufus to make a bootable USB with that .ISO file. Tell the PC to boot off USB and install on the hard drive. Ubuntu or Linux Mint are common first time distros. If all you need is a media player and a web browser it is very easy to set up. Plenty of guides on Youtube that are easy to follow.

My biggest gripe with XP is it brings down the security of the entire network, not just that device. Weakest chain link idea. No if it was airgapped and would never be on the network, it should be fine.

It sounds like Linux would do exactly what you need. If the computer is old and slow, consider using a distro with a lightweight desktop environment like XFCE or LXDE. I can recommend Xubuntu and Lubuntu. Linux Mint with XFCE is also probably very good.
