Ryzen Stock Cooler or Custom Air Cooler?!

Danboy360

With Ryzen coming out in less than 2 days dependant on where you are in the world, what's everyone take on coolers? Obviously with this being such a hush hush project, there aren't a huge number of compatible coolers, especially for people wanting to get a new Ryzen build on release day, with their own CPU Coolers being pretty hush hush too (no where you can purchase them!)

So what are people's take on the BEST AM4 cooler to get, or will they be sticking with AMD's stock attempt given that it looks much more solid compared to Intel's offering, as well as the fact they are making stock coolers for their 'X' range (intel equivalent 'K' range which has no cooler).

@Danboy360 stock coolers have never been adequate for high performance CPUs in heavy demanding environments.

That is true, however without knowing their performance, especially the beefier Wraith, it could be possible that the trend is starting to shift.

I'd just use the stock cooler and see how it is, maybe try and mod the LED ring onto a 212 Evo lmao

Id slap a 360 rad over the wraith any day I just wanted to say the wraith isn't bad for a stock cooler.

I've heard the wraith is as good or if not better than the 212 evo

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Yep, he is right, ryzen's stock cooler is pretty solid, I would give It a chance.

Ryzen is more energy efficient than the Intel counterparts which means less heat output. Combine that with the fact that the wraith cooler is actually a pretty good design and you should get respectable temps even on the high end CPUs.

That being said, if you are planning on extensive overclocking then I would definitely get an aftermarket cooler. It's hard to say how well the Wraith will hold up to an overclock especially since heat output isn't necessarily linear to frequency increase.

I would feel more than comfortable using the stock cooler on the CPU until I could either afford another one or until it came in the mail. It would be a PR nightmare if AMD shipped a CPU that couldn't be cooled with its stock cooler, especially since they are trying very hard to turn around all of the negative stereotypes bout them right now.

The best coolers today will probably be the same more or less when AM4 comes out as manufacturers ship with updated mounting hardware.

Their stock coolers look promising looking at the Wraith.

That's the same feelings I've been having.  Especially given the larger lack of fan compatibility, if people are ordering these CPU's but can't use anything BUT the AMD cooler (especially if they haven't got the money to buy a new cooler) then it would be a nightmare.  Looking forward to seeing some proper benchmarks and temps tomorrow when the media ban is lifted on those with dev kits from uploading details.
