[Laptop] 7700HQ vs 6700HQ performance

So I'm stuck deciding between two laptops, MSI GE62VR 6RF and GE62VR 7R. The 6RF has a Skylake 6700HQ and the 7RF has the new Kaby Lake 7700HQ and I was wondering if the additional cost of the 7700HQ is worth it over the 6700HQ in terms of performance? I will be using this laptop for normal use (web browsing, university work, watching videos etc etc), gaming, photo and video editing.

Thanks in advance,

Sean.

Anything crazy? They both have same TDP so theoretically they should have same battery life. I think you'll be fine with a Skylake.

The major difference between the two CPUs is the slight clock speed diffrence and the newer architecture, so I wouldnt say that its worth it for the extra cost.

The skylake CPU is probably more than enough ;)

why? I already have a desktop... and I can't bring my desktop on vacation so I want a laptop that can handle video and photo editing.

If the only difference between both laptops is the cpu, then it's not worth it at that price difference. You most likely won't notice the difference :)

I personally wouldn't recommend one of the new MSI laptops. My brother picked up a GS63VR right when it came out and he immediately had issues with it. First, as an MSI feature, it automatically switches the Windows power mode to High Performace all of the time after every sleep, even while on battery and previously set to another mode. He also had major issues running his video editing software, MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2015. It caused the UI to bug out and rendered MAGIX basically useless.

If you also look the 7700HQ model also comes with 16GB of RAM compared to the Skylake's 8GB. I would probably choose the Skylake because Kaby Lake is almost identical performance-wise and the price doesn't justify it.

Quit suggesting desktops in the laptop and pre-build section, this isn't helping people that are looking for laptops so why bother making a comment.

The performance difference is marginal. only buy the 7700hq one if its cheaper than the 6700hq one.

I really liked my GE62, before it met an unforunate end at the hands of the GF's spilled beer. I would definitely recommend them. For video editing I would get the skylake model and use the money you save to upgrade the ram. I don't think 8gb is going to be enough for any real heavy productivity tasks.

I've got a 6700HQ + GTX 1060 in my current laptop, and that processor isn't a bottleneck at all. In fact, it yields better gaming performance in some games compared to my desktop with an i7-980X + GTX 1070 because it has really solid single-threaded performance.

I'd grab the model with the 6700HQ even though it has less ram. For less than the difference in price, you can still upgrade that to 16 GB and the overall performance will be pretty similar despite having different CPU's. The difference between the 6700HQ and 7700HQ is only around 10%, which likely won't be noticed all that much.

how was the touchpad on the GE62? I heard the ELAN drivers are worse than the Windows drivers on touchpads. Did you ever swap out the RAM? if so, was it easy to do? I'm planning on putting 16gb of RAM and a 500gb M.2 SSD if I do end up getting the GE62. Thanks!

What laptop do you have if you don't mind me asking? I'll be swapping out the RAM and SSD anyway to a bigger capacity. I'm looking at the 6700hq processors since the 7700hq isn't worth the extra price, thanks for your input! :)

Good review here I skimmed, about 10% increase across the board + video decoding for youtube and netflix in 4k if you plan on hooking it to a 4k monitor...?

So assuming if I don't need to play 4k youtube videos and I don't need to connect my laptop to a 4k monitor, then I don't need the i7-7700hq?

I think so, personaly I might get it anyways if its not too big a price difference (10% is still 10%). <--possibly flawed thinking

Touchpad took some getting used to. it has a weird grooved texture to it, but I ended up really liking it because I could eventually tell where I was on the track pad. Ram was super easy to access, as were the m.2 slots.

The new laptop I went with is the Dell XPS 15 9560

Noted that KabyLake provide H.265/HEVC (successor to H.264) 10-bit (the standard) hardware decode, while SkyLake only provide HEVC 8-bit. So, if watching HEVC video is on your plate, go for a KabyLake.
