To TI or Not TI?

mark_smith85

Hi All

Recently I setup a new rig (7700k with Asus Strix z270e, 16GB Ram and NZXT x62 AIO) however I didnt purchase a new GPU at the time (January) as I thought the 1080Ti was going to be showcased/released at CES

I was prepared to wait until March (PAX East) but now I'm seeing some articles saying the TI may not come out until June/July!

Should I wait until the 1080Ti is released or go for a 1080 now?

My goal is to be playing some games at either 4k or Ultra Hide definitely at least in HDR (just waiting for the right monitor to be released).

If you really can't wait then buy the 1080 but if you can afford to wait and see how the 1080ti performs, in my opinion I would just buy a gtx 1080 it can still game really well at 4K at medium settings but if you want to max everything out at 4K ultra wide then wait for the ti version. Hope this response helped.

No point in ever waiting on a product. Something greater and better will always be on the horizon.

No one knows if there will be a 1080 Ti or not. So you can just wait to find that out.

But they said they would be releasing one just not when.

You're probably not seeing new gpus until Computex in late May. Then you should have the choice between Pascal Refresh and AMD's Vega. I imagine there will be a GP102 card released in Pascal Refresh, but I bet they'll do like they did with Kepler and call the GP102 chip the 1180, the full fat GP104 (eg rebranded 1080) the 1170 Ti, and the cutdown GP104 with GDDR5X the GTX 1170.

Even on a theoretical 1080 ti there's going to be some compensation on 4k.  You'll need to turn some settings down.  I'd say if your intention is eventually to have that experience, you'll be waiting for possibly an 1100 or 1200 GPU to hit, or going the SLI route.  Whether that wait is worth it to you or not is up to ... well, you.

I would say, based on this, to make your GPU purchasing decision alongside your monitor purchase.  Don't worry too much about what will be available in the future.

Hi All

Thanks for the advice, decided to it's worth waiting for the 1080ti or even replacement to that so I'm gonna get a 1050ti for now at least I can play some modern games on my current monitor (1080p).

I can then wait until new GPUs are released and I can go 4k / ultra wide then and sell the 1050ti.
